It's a bit of an open ended one here ... you don't say where you want to fly from, and exactly what date range you're after. Still, a quick hunt came up with this as an example:
Gatwick to Washington (LGW - DCA)
Leaves 16th December
Arrives back 1st January (you fly out from DCA on the 31st December ... start of January is £££)

£295 through Opodo on US Airways (includes all taxes/surcharges etc).

I tried turning up at the airport after hearing stories of cheap flights ... I wandered round and was given stupidly high prices for flights ... apparently the airlines hate people doing this and hike the prices (they like people booking waaay in advance). Still, went online at an internet cafe in Heathrow, and got a bargain ... so it worked out ok in the end!

Wow thanks, that was really helpful! :D Any other really helpful tips like these? :P

EDIT: Leave anywhere from London.

If you fancy 'hunting', there are a number of sites I use:
Kayak: Has something called 'fare buzz' which can find good deals to lots of destinations
ITA: A bit more hardcore, but quite useful for finding random deals
FareCompare: I've only had limited success with this site, but some people swear by it

There's sky scanner as well, but I think that's mainly for flights in Europe

I never quite understood how to get the utter-most cheapest deal: Online and at the airport. Do you think it would be cheaper at the airport?

And what is it with that Opodo site. I found the £295 you were talking about, but then I put in for 3 adults, and it came up as £322 per person (No insurance or anything) I then went back to searching for 1 adult, and it came up as £311 as the cheapest... something's not right here!

There's another flight, to Brisbane Australia, again, leaving from any London Airport, I wish to go at the end of July '09 and return by early Sept the same year. Any advice in getting the cheapest deal there while I still have the time? I'd imagine that companies would be eager to get money as part of the credit crunch deals?

I just had a quick look on Opodo. Where it shows you the prices for the flights, it also shows availability. It's saying that the £295 price is only available for 2 more seats.

I'm hoping that there will be some fare sales in January. It's always a risk ... I've never been able to predict when fares will go up or come down :)

I thought there's always a sale in Jan? Its after everyone's holidays are finishing so there's got to be :s

Any help on my Australia dilemma (above) ? :p
