Check out Ebay for ideas on how to cut costs - there's loads of people selling cheap refills/cheaper ways of refilling cartridges.

(I'm not saying you have to buy from them, I'm just saying use them to get ideas of what's available, then you can shop around).

You may find you can replace the printer for the same cost as Lexmark cartridges with a printer that takes cheap compatibles, I have a brother dcp-120c and the carts work out about £1 each for each of the four it takes, there is less wastage too as the yellow, cyan and magenta are seperate cartridges so the others dont get wasted when just one runs out.

so it just costs you £4 everytime the printer completley runs out of ink?

throw it out and get an epson or a cannon i pay about £7 for a set of 5 for my cannon pixma ip4300 i just remove the old chip from the origional and put it on the compatible they seem to last longer than my old epson ink

Yes thats about the sum of it, you need to buy three sets for £12 to get them cheaper, but for that price its fine!

my advice is to do a bit of homework and price up compatable inks first, on the internet and from local shops, local shops may be a bit more expensive but you may need ink in a rush and cant wait for internet delivery

get a laser printer for about £50-60 as it works out about £25 for a toner cartridge which prints about 10,000 pages! A lexmark cart prints about 100 and cost about £15.

far cheaper in the long run than any inkjet.

EDIT:-

I bought this a few months ago and is super quick at printing and great quality. Special offer at the moment. £50 for a laser printer including delivery!

found this on the ukdvdr web site
Important Note: Due to recent changes in Epson`s printer designs, these inks may not be compatible with more modern Epson printers (manufactured after 1st April 2007). If you are unsure whether these inks will be compatible or not, please try purchasing and swapping only one cartridge at first so as to minimise any unnecessary outlay in the event that they don`t work.
Please do not puchase too many until tested as we will NOT accept any returns of this item if incompatible.
(If you have previously used compatible ink cartridges in your Epson printer, without problem before 1 June 2007, then please ignore this
just be careful not to buy the older type instead of the updated chip type
