Childhood Games - Remember?

Remember the days before electronic games?

Remember playing outside?

Remember how games came in seasons? Tennis at Wimbledon time when all the kids would appear with tennis rackets and play tournaments against the kids from the next street? Or conker contests in the autumn?

What about ...

Peevers (hopscotch),
Best falls (you take turns in acting out falling down fatally injured in the most dramatic fashion)
Making Dens (indoors and outside depending on the weather)
Kick the can
Hula hoops
Kerbie (you throw a ball from one side of the road to the other to try to get it to bounce back to you from the edge of the kerb)

What were your favourite childhood games?

I used to love kerbie, but then you could see the kerb as there was only a few cars in the street.

What were those games that girls used to play bouncing balls against a wall and what were the chants that went with them?
And Skipping songs? And how did they know when to jump in to skipping ropes without getting strangled?
And what was that game with the elastic bands all joined in one big loop?

How about Cat's Cradle and those hand clapping games that little girls could play at blur speed?

I liked the elastic game, girls used to have a large loop of elastic and 2 would stand about 4 foot apart and put it around their ankles, kind of like a skipping game where someone else would be in the middle and had to jump over the elastic, then it would go to the knees and upwards until you counldn't jump over it anymore. I got to about the waist one girl could get to the neck!

Its what we did to ginger kids:w00t:

No, it was when you knocked on a door and run away. The names for most games are regional.

knock on someones door and run fast lol

Bushwaking was find a nice privit fence and run up to it and turn as you jump and leave your body indented into the bush, it was always fun when you went right the way through and had to get up and run quick before getting chased.

Amongst others we played 'Knock and leg it' (knock on someone's door and then leg it!), Tin Tang Tommy (my kids call it 40 40 home where you leave 1 person in a certain place and have to make it back to them without them seeing).

We called it "Garden creeping", we had 100ft gardens on my street, so it was easy to do it without being spotted. Imagine trying it in the modern housing estates.
