I've got SKY and an xbox and they both need optical inputs. If you get a home cinema system with a single optical you can always get either a splitter or a switcher to go between the opticals.

If you are using HDMI lead with a premium or core, you will have to buy the MS dongle which allows to connect an optical cable to the xbox graphics output slot but a much cheaper option is to get a cheap vga cable (or I believe you can use the supplied component cable) and use that http://www.chadledford.com/?p=50

If you are not fussed about true surround sound you can just use stereo (2 rca imputss) and get your home cinema to convert to surround sound.

thanx for the help, i'd rather have the full surround on the xbox as i have the hd dvd player,

if i get a system with 1 optical and i do get a splitter, does that take away any of the sound quality? also how much are the spplitters about?

also wont a optical plug straight into the xbox? (sorry im rubbish at these things) and will i need an addapter? how much are these about aswwell?

thanx for your help

Are you using an HDMI cable to hook your xbox to the TV? and what kind of xbox do you have premium, core, elite?

optical switches start from around £15

In that case I think you can connect the optical cable directly to the little squarish hole on the component connector...

As for the splitter affecting the signal - I'm not sure but as its a digital optical signal then I would have thought it would be unaffected.

If you don't already have one you will have to buy an optical (toslink) cable.

That could be tricky - you can get cheap surround systems £30-£40 but they don't tend to have optical in. If its for a bedroom are you going to be limited as to how loud to can have them? I mostly play on my xbox at night when my (young) kids have gone to bed which means I can really use surround sound speakers to their full effect. If you do have to keep the noise down a bit, have you thought about these (surround sound headphones)

It means you can have the volume higher and in games like Call of Duty, you can hear their footsteps before they come round the corner....

i know what you mean

if i have it on of a night i will just have the sound on the tv,

its just the option i want aswell as i may aswell get a cinema kit i can plug everything into

when i say cheap i mean around £150 - 200, not 1 for like 700 pound lol,

this should be also good with the hd dvd player on surround sound aswell

If you're budget is about £200 - how about the Logitech Z-5500

Just be warned though - the sub-woofer looks pretty meaty and might blow a hole in your floor.....

Have a browse through the avforums - just be careful with some of the advice, they tend to be perfectionists with no budget limitations.....
