I use http://order.1and1.co.uk for buying .co.uk domains, they do offer hosting as well - seems quite cheap but no idea what it is like.

microsoft live offer free hosting and domain... don't know the url, but i'm sure its been posted as a deal.
I got mine there for free :)

You need a credit card, tried it before, only got a debit card.
#4
You thought about hosting yourself? Then all you need is a £5 domain.
#5
I'll probably host myself anyway.

Just checked my balance, can order a domain :)

Have a look for Apache2Triad if you are planning to host on a Windows PC. Makes everything so easy.

Good luck!

Will do thanks, rep coming your way, do we know any reliable hosts who have linux?

1and1 are good for domains. I'm with them and I've never had any downtime...

They're a bit expensive for anything else though.

If you go through Quidco you get £5 too!

However, the small print says its free but only for the first year can't remember how much it is after that though.

One company I used to swear by for domains was 123-reg.co.uk until a couple of weeks ago!

A domain I was waiting to expire (and checked every few hours), was finally there to be purchased. I got in very quick! Got my domain name register confirmation email etc and was billed accordingly.

When I typed in the URL at lunchtime, I was shocked to see it pointing to a website. I checked whois - and someone else bought the domain 3 hours AFTER I had.

Basically they hadn't bothered to tell Nominet and as the other guys company did - that was it.

Despite numerous calls telling me they would sort it out with Nominet and promised returned calls, I heard nothing more - though a few days latter, they returned the payment.

Quite shocking really. I was most miffed at the time - and had hoped to use the domain for venenue.
And I know the domain in question was bought by another user here!!!!! (Damn you!!!!!!) ;-)

Just found these guys, someone on anothr site said that they seem reliable, but I cant personally say, got to be good for the price as its free... 250MB space & 100GB bandwidth.

If you try them I'd be interested in hearing how good they are...

Dont know, but the guy's site I saw said he has used them for some time and they were reliable...

Do you get a CGI-BIN directory that you can put your own scripts in, or just the pre-installed cgi scripts from the script manager ?

If it turns out to be any good remember the rep ... ;-)

Worth taking a few "freebie" accounts "just in case"!:p

If you've got the login, would be grateful if you could ftp in and just check if you can upload anything to the cgi-bin dir and maybe check if you can chmod anything... only if you get a chance.

Cheers guys :-)

http://fuzioned.com/awbs/linux_hosting.php £25 for the space, £7 for a .co.uk for 2 years. So for £57 you can have hosting and a .co.uk domain for 2 years. Lets you host 10 domains on the same account too.

Gives you Cpanel 11 and fantastico

always have and always will use www.krystal.co.uk

UK based, customer service is second to none and they are very affordable (they take paypal too)

Theres a domain i want and it will expire in june. The owner has had it for 7 years. I am hoping they forget to renew, as theres nothing on that domain ... its going to waste. Can someone tell me the best way to snipe this, to ensure i get it ?

thanks

There are a few domain hosts that have the facility to help you. There are no guarantees though. (ie they need to do the check at the time its released - and someone could get in minutes earlier and pip you.) Its happened to me. I actually got a domain I was waiting for - but the host 123-reg "forgot" to forward the registration with Nominet. Someone registered 3 hours later (who had obviously been watching also) but his company registered. I lost. Highly unfair!

The domain goes into the pot after 2 months, but it still lies inactive giving the owner one final chance. They are given a further 4 weeks. So it should be 3 months before you can buy it. However, Nominet is a rule unto themselves. Dont expect them to release it on the date it should be. Best just to keep checking as I did. Only make sure you chose a decent domain host!

Edit! Ha ha.... just realised this is an old thread - as you can see, Ive already had this moan!!!!

thanks guv. It really is annoying when the domain is not even being used ! Well, atleast not for hosting ... maybe for email. I would like to use it for both .

I'll just keep an eye out then. Ive put the note for myself in google calendar :d

When its about to be released, a whois search gives a hint that its going to be available soon. Cant help you with the term it uses (it was a month or so ago.) Just tap the domain into your chosen host every few hours near the time.
