Compensation from freezer manufacturer

Hopefully someone can advise us on this.

Is it worth asking Hotpoint for compensation after our 5 week old fridge freezer stopped working the week before christmas and we lost all our christmas food?

For anyone who wants the details...
In November last year we bought a brand new Hotpoint fridge freezer. Then the week before christmas, the freezer stopped working and defrosted all the food. As my partner was in hospital at the time (ruptured appendix), it went unnoticed for over a day and all the food in the freezer defrosted including all our christmas food. We ended up having to throw about 90% of the food.

Hotpoint were really quite good about fixing it and got it fixed on christmas eve (it needed two engineers to fix it) however we are out of pocket for all the food we lost when it defrosted. We were talking about it last night and were wondering if it worth writing to them and asking for compensation? I'm not normally the type to complain but the timing of the failure made it a huge inconvenience and cost us a fair bit. Anyone got any experience of this or similar??

Thanks,

Rob

Yes go for it they will have to pay the cost of the spoilt food.
If you have receipts for frozen food then that will be of great help for you

well its certainly worth a try, just drop them an email explaining everything in a calm manner and see what happens!

If you can’t get anything from Hotpoint try checking your house insurance as this often has freezer cover

this happened to my sisters freezer, and im sure it was the company she purchased it from that paid out

Talk to hotpoint polite and concise. E-mail or letter is also a good idea.
They are responsible and should pay out for the food (may be something written in the warranty t&c's)
dunno if claiming under insurance would affect your premium though.

If your insurance will cover they will not pay as it is not legal to have two claims on one incident, they could give you some vouchers or something but not cash.

we had same problem with our daewoo fridge freezer,,we wrote a letter to daewoo with a list of all spoilt items and they sent us a cheque for full amount

The same thing happened to me a week before xmas, but mine was a Beko fridge freezer which was 11 months old. Will they still pay me compensation then? Also i took photos of all the food i had to throw out but cant remember exactly what it was, how much compensation did you claim for? Can you only claim frozen food or can you claim fridge food as well? As i can claim on my house insurance but only for frozen food and i might get charged more next years premium. Thanks.

Worst case scenario, you spend half an hour submitting a compensation request to Beko and you get nothing back. It's worth giving it a try, I reckon.

You should claim from the place of purchase a your legal rights are with them.
