Hi I just had a guy round from home learning college and we came to a decision that i should take the CompTIA A+ course, But It looked kinda basic as i know how to do most of the aspects but never worked in an environment with them, I have just taught myself. Has anyone here done any home college courses and if they are any good, And which company is best. Or if there any people who work in IT and know a better route i can take. Oh and it cost £1778 which seems very steep

thank you

Do you not have a college nearby that you can attend? Also, many colleges do courses which are flexible and allow for a fair proportion of home study at your own speed. The cost you have been given is extremely high and personally, I'd be talking to a local college. Also, some schools also offer evening courses and there may be something suitable there.

If you know how to do all of the stuff on the course just download the training videos (there's lots on-line vtc/cbt) and book the exam without the course.

I doubt whether passing this course will get you a job or get you a pay rise if you already have a job.

A lot of money for almost no gain.

What CompTIA qualifications do you get?

I did the CompTIA A+ IT Technician one at this IT academy and its not that difficult. all you need is a book and some sample example questions. But thats just the CompTIA A+ IT Technicina one, there's loads other CompTIA qualifications..good luck

A+ would be a good place to start, but not for that price. To get A+ you need to pass 2 exams which you can book yourself for £114 each (www.prometric.com). If you got yourself some study materials cheaply (for example Amazon £19.99 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/CompTIA-Certification-All-Guide-Sixth/dp/0072263113/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1256648837&sr=8-1), and also use as much free resources as possible from the internet, you could pass it much more cheaply.

After the A+, you should consider some Microsoft exams (XP is still widely used), so passing the MCDST Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician which is 2 exams, would be beneficial. If you want a career in IT it is also either worth looking for some voluntary work with charities in their IT departments or a permanent paid job, such as being proactive and contacting schools as most are constantly updating and increasing IT, so they tend to look for staff as well.

The reason I asked how old you were is that if you were 16-19 you could get A+, MCDST, NVQ, Diploma, all for free on a 5 month course.
