I am having MASSIVE problems with my computer! Basically whats happening is i cannot shut down, restart look at pictures/documents, basically do anything. When i connect to the internet, within about 3 seconds everything freezes, then i obviously cant restart etc so i'm having to press the power button to turn it all off.
When i turn it back on again its giving me the option for safe mode, start windows normally etc etc, if i press windows normally, its the same process all over again.

I cannot system restore, and i have just discovered that i am able to type this by connecting to the internet through safe mode with network option, this is working well. I have also tried doing system restore in safe mode, but its still not working. I am desperate for help, this is the only way of communication my husband (working overseas) has with my toddler, and we have not been able to contact him for the last week that this has been happening....please guys :(

sounds like a virus................. need to reformat if you can't restore
suspended#2
use the Safe Mode to save all your images/other things you want to save to a CD or something, then Reformat

Do you have an antivirus? is so then what one is it? and can you use it in safe mode?

If you can use it then do a complete scan of all files, i recommend Avast antivirus
#3
yep save everything important and reinstall windows
#4
got up to date antivirus?
tried leaving pc to do its thing for 30 mins - sometimes auto downloading updates grinds everything else to a halt

Right, thats the problem, all my babes photos are on here and i dont wanna lose them. I'm very tempted on standing on the effing thing and smashing it to bits if it wasn't for her pics!
I'll get a disc tomorrow then, what do i look for on it, and then how do i save the pics.....in simple terms please. Rep will be given and many thanks!

Its just saying the system restore didn't work, and nothing has been changed. I'm doing a full scan now with AVG in safe mode, when you say leave it for 20 mins, how do you mean? Ive left it whilst its frozen, and it does nothing, i've also left it on the start up screen, it the eventually freezes and i'm back to square one.

man if i lived closer i'd fix it for you or atleast rip the photos to dvd for you.

turn the computer on without the internet connected and get the photos off?

or right now upload them to photobucket?

You can save the pictures by buying memory stick or CD-R blank disc (cheap to buy)
and then putting it in your computer, go to My Computer and see the memory stick, right click and select explore, and then open the picture file next to it, and then just drag from there to the memory stick

#13
Coold you not use a linux live cd to grab all the stuff you need and move to a flash drive as suggested

+1

Update your anti-virus while in safemode and do a virus scan, also download spybot and run it, theres no need to refornat until you've exhausted all the alternatives.

I'll get the disc tomorrow then, i think that will be the best bet for me. So i then put it in the disc drive and its basically a case of dragging the pics to the disc in my computer? I think i can manage that! I'm thick as mince when it comes to computers, so everyone thinks its a virus then?

oh snap.... i'd stop using the pc right now and boot it up only when you have the CD. you're hdd might be failing also, i'd get a few cds incase you do it wrong.

your best bet is a USB stick or memory card. as that is dragging and dropping files

if its a hardware prob you kill your operating system, reinstall and get the problem straight back

got a spare hard drive?

take out the original drive and replace it - try a fresh installation on the spare -

I cant help you as im not very savvy when it comes to computers, kids are though, but i went out last week & bought an external hard drive for this very reason, as soon as i get any digi pics or video i put them straight on the hd, i would hate to lose my pics !

Get a copy of Active Disk Image. Load it onto your PC and create a rescue disk, its a bootable rescue disk. From this you can Boot your PC and it has its own Windows Explorer. From here you can save out your baby's photos. You will need another hard disk connected, save everything you need to this. Alternative to this is ERD commander or a standalone Win XP disk made with Barts PE. This will give you a standalone XP disk to run the system from PC CD rom.

Another way is to get a linux disk like Ubuntu, you can have an option to run Ubuntu (linux) from Disk. This will allow you to save stuff.

Turning now to your PC. Have you loaded speedfan so you can look at your CPU temp? Is the CPU fan running as the freeze up can be caused by excess temps. If it is a higher temp it needs you to remove the cpu fan and redo the CPU and its thermal paste.

Have you reseated memory and graphics cards, always check these first. Good luck and after getting your piccies back, if necessary you can redo the OS for the PC.

PM me if your stuck and I will try and communicate via this thread as I access the site.

I have used Avast antivirus for around 2 years, i've never had a single problem, not even a minor one
Before i used every other antivirus and my computer would go haywire constantly
So i definetly recommend Avast

all im saying is get your picture uploaded to photbucket, nothing to do with your computer problems, but at least your pics will be safe, if its your hard drive failing it could go and pics are then gone

It does seem daunting at first but believe me its not that difficult. Do you know anyone that has a working PC? They can take their hard drive out and plug it into your PC. You will then have a working operating system and your hard drive will be known as the slave. You then use your bios to boot from your friends hard drive by pressing the F12 key as it is booting up, choose the new drive and hit the return key. Once this is done you can read your hard drive from the borrowed drive. Does this make sense.

All the above assumes that a friend can install your new borrowed hard drive into your PC as a temporary measure. this will save your PC. You really need someone who knows what their doing as listening to everyone on here to format will ensure you lose your pics. This way you can at least save them, but, whatever you do, do not save any more data to the offending hard disk. This ensure that, if needs be, you can run a prog like GETDataback which will retrieve your data but it can take hours to do.

Using a hard disk with an actual operating system on means you can boot to your PC to save data. Alternatively take the drive out of your PC and plug it into another PC. Don't be to hasty on what you do as you will be able to save the piccies using the above method. Then you can sort your PC out after you got the piccies back.
