Get it in to safe mode mate and try it from there. If not you will have to do the old traditional dos way for coptying it over.

But think safe mode will work. Press f8 when booting up

Try downloadint the avast anti virus, it'll do a scan before booting so should pick up the virus before it activates

if its counting down that windows is shutting down
start - run - shutdown -a

will abort the shutdown

well if its really really important then the last last resort could be to dual boot linux (i.e. ubuntu) which is free, onto the old machine and transfer the data to memory stick there..but i'm sure there's better ways than this one.

oh and theres the swapping of the hard drive onto your new machine but thats a bit iffy if you've got warranty and the old system is really old and use different cables..and it could get infected again...

can lend you my ide to usb adapter if you like
take the old drive out the old computer and connect to the new one via usb
just make sure all your virus defs are upto date
#9
If you can get your hands on a compatible Windows installation disc I'd attempt repair first.

i know how to transfer to a memory stick so i was hoping there was some way i could get the old one to stay on

will send you my live xp boot disk (bartpe)if i can find it
it loads windows from the cd
also try turning all the powermanagement options off in the bios it sound more like the power button is stuck than a virus

that would be great thankyou i will try the powermanagement thing and let you know.... it was a virus the antivirus picked it up and it was working fine still just really slow it was when i tried getting rid of it that it stopped loading windows

When you doing the dos thing you shouldn't be loading windows. Use a win 98 boot disk and boot from there to do it. That should work as it wont hit windows. IF it still reboots its something else not the virus. Could be what was suggested above

If you can find a copy then ERD commander is what you need, this will enable you to boot into the old pc and copy any data off onto another harddrive or memory stick. If you cannot get the software then I would go down the route of putting the old harddrive into an external drive caddy and connecting it to the new machine, you will then be able to get your photos and any documents that you require. The chances of the virus spreading to your new pc are remote unless you physically copy the infected file over to your new pc, however as you are only wanting photos etc then this should not be an issue as most virus's reside on the operating system to which you will not be touching. hope this helps sorry its abit long winded.

You could try using :

http://www.knoppix.org/

It's Linux, download + burn the image then you can run it from a CD on your old machine - once loaded it's possible to pick up on the harddrive and transfer across to usb.

nope win98 won't read ntfs partitions

thats the one but instead of re-installing windows, use it boot up and select repair using command prompt, will only work if your system bios can support usb devices

guess its not an original xp cd then, the proper one will give you the option to "repair using a command prompt" at the first screen you see,
back to the drawing board! or try the knoppix live cd above will be slow but should get u there simply

i did the powermanagement thing and no change but i did find out that spybot which i used may have been the cause and having spoken to others who have had the same problem it seems they call it the windows log on log off loop and the bart pe disk does fix the problem... so getting somewhere now :?
