Hi,

My desktop is running really slow on the internet. It seems fine in normal use (documents ect) but takes ages to move from one site to another ect. I think I have ruled out the broadband connection as My laptop works fine on the same ethernet connection. I have done the malware thing and this comes up with no problems. Could it be a hardware component? As you can tell I am no expert on computers so just looking for some pointers. It even fails to complete a broadband speed check.

Thanks Mike.

Clean your cookies and history out

i would try deleting all your temporary internet files. Try AVG Free to check for any viruses too.

I wouldn't reccommend them, hate these small programs that just spam up and mess up your comp. They run at start up, slowing you down, they stop programs running that should be...etc. If you are going to use software, use something proper like Your Uninstaller, they work well, and keep what you need.

Get CCleaner - no spam and is a very useful tool to clean up your pc.

Use Ccleaner as someone suggested above and then run TCP Optimizer (FREE) to tweak your settings. These two combined should solve most of the problems unless it is a problem with your ISP.

i reccomend ccleaner too.

tuneup utilities is good but you have to pay for it, i got it free with kaspersky, they probably dont do that anymore though.

and what internet security have you got? some slow down your browser ....oh and get rid of junk like google and yahoo toolbars ect.

once all thats done do a disk defrag, should speed up a little.

Read the topic people, it's his 'internet' that's running slow not his computer.

Is it the entire internet or just the web? i.e. Do you have problems with anything outside a web browser that uses the internet like skype, online gaming or even your anti-virus updates taking a long time to download?

If it is or could be just the web then it may be your browser causing problems, a quick way to check this is to try another one like Opera.

Exactly, that's why clearing the old files related to his/her internet use could speed up their browsing...hence the recommendations for Ccleaner.

+1. I also recommended using TCP optimizer which optimizes the internet connection, nothing to do with computer speed.

I never recommend alternatives as it is upto the OP to choose what he wants to use. Be it firefox or opera or IE or whatever. Just trying to address the real issue rather than suggesting alternatives.

Hi All,
Thanks for your advice, I will give some of these a try. When I log onto the internet it seems fairly quick to load the home page. But when I then try to go to other sites it can take an age to load the pages. I dont think it is the ISP as My laptop works fine on the exact same setup.
