Computer repair nightmare?

What do you guys think of this? ever visit those repair people in person?

The whole reason the repair shops exist - is to offering information advantage at a price. Truth be told, those who are I.T literate ought to know how to fix computers, and would rarely need those services. If the fault is its software, then a simple system restore, or operating system restore could do the trick; but guess information failure is far too common amongst us. Who do you blame for that? The repairers? Probably not, they are just derived demand.

If problem is with the hardware, then warranty ought to cover it, however far too many fail to extend it over basic warranty, at point of purchase just so they safe a few quid, rather investing in the peace of mind as well; could you blame the manufactures? Probably Not. No matter how good the design or QC are, some inevitably lasts shorter than others.

As a by-product of the industry, naturally there are people who abuse the trust of customers. But it's common sense - when leaving private data in the open, be prepared for the worst; In a similar context, would be leaving household door open- ‘do you leave your doors open, for strangers to wonder around and mess with?’ I guess most people don't. PC is suppose to be personal computer, unless the owners behave responsibly, it’s not personal; especially when encrypting those data is so simple. If you don’t want something be seen by others, don’t leave it around.

It's sheer stupidity, that many people processes these days, which is beyond me, I hope that most repairers are decent people, who do their best competing with larger firm to stay in business; the few bad apples with poor work ethics as seem here are isolated case. After all, without problems, how could they stay in business? That said, it’s hard to deny the simple fact - that far too many people don't treat their data, especially private data with enough concern. People who are leaving their private data at the hands of those who, may abuse the trust is ignorant, just as not knowing what’s wrong, and are by no means innocent I think.

I think this mentality could be better served by abbreviating the above as the 'Gary Glitter' effect :thumbsup:

On a more serious note, it's pretty shocking either way. I used to run a business repairing computers and not once was I tempted to rife through other people's data. It's theirs after all which they have entrusted you with. Not only did it serve me better sleeping at night (when I got a chance to sleep that is), but I gained a good reputation for being a decent and honest guy. One customer actually went out to work and left me to lock up his house once I was done..!
