Concept of eBay!!

I was just watching my friends ordering through eBay..
I've advised them of many options before they try out in eBay
My advise is
1. HUKD
2. gumtree search to find if its available nearby ur area
3. Yahoo groups - freegle in your area.
If all 3 are not available , then I go with eBay. I feel apart from very few rare items eBay are still costly (and a small amount of risk).
What's ur opinion?

Also can you please suggest any other groups to follow... thanks in adv..

Problem witj gumtree is you need time to search and call or email the seller to check if item is still available, item could be fault or fake or stolen etc..... at least there is a record of the transaction with ebay and or paypal.... I was never fortunate to get anything worthwhile from freecycle so I stopped using... I gave my 3 months old rowing machine on freecycle though, had about 70 people email me asking if they could have it.
I still prefer ebay dont have to worry about meeting up with dodgy strangers etc... with ebay I have 100s of choices and item is delivered as well..... Dont get me wrong, I look on gumtree once in a while but if I need something asap I go on ebay...

TBH ebay has it's faults, but if you are not net savvy, or a bit new to buying it has unbeatable protection for the buyer.

If you want something there and then it's also a lot easier on the bay.

Don't see peoples issues with Ebay i have found it invaluable to get parts etc which are hard to find Ebay. The other sites mentioned also have their problems and many people have been scammed even on here. Ebay is just common sense use it right you will be ok. Have only been scammed once as a buyer in many hundreads of transactions and that was because i stupidly paid by Nochex so my own fault for not following their rules. I always check the bay first before going other routes,

Can't fully agree with your statement.

Allthough some items are overprices on Ebay (usually more standard widely available stuff), often there is (unfortunately?) not much of an alternative, unless you want to trust some unknown webshops or risk import duty from China - I am talking mainly electronics here.

For example I am at the moment looking for DVD headrests to keep the kids happy in the car over longer journeys. Having googled quite a bit, I end up going back to Ebay being the best price alternative for European sellers. Any other advice / knowledge would however be highly appreciated ;-)

There's always Amazon, same risks/protection!? Always use your credit card, by law they are liable for purchases between £100 and £30,000 even if you only paid for a small part of the goods with your credit card. (section 75 of The Credit Consumer Act), therefore giving you purchase protection!?

But there is always risk with purchasing from any site!?

ebay isn't as bad as people make out. sure there are some hishonest sellers but if you are a buyer and know your price if ebay is cheapest i don't bat an eyelid before buying.
