My tv is only 720p, whereas the main one back home is 1080p. Could that make a difference? I've tried several different resolutions on my laptop.

Problem is, the setting it remembers is to just display on other screen (as apposed to displaying on both), meaning I can't access settings whilst its plugged in as it only 'displays' on my tv. Any ideas?

where, sorry? Can't find anywhere called graphic properties. Ideally I'd like to change external display settings to mirror before I connect it so I can fiddle with settings. Not sure how - if possible...

hate to be so simple but have u tried just turning off your computer while having the cable connected and then turning it on, most computers then just realise there connected to an external monitor
