If you are up and running with your modem, remove cable from back of comp and plug into back of router. Then you'll have to put cable from router output into comp. Insert installation cd and follow instructions.
You need to be hard connected from comp to router to set it up. Then you'll be able to remove cable from router to comp and connect wirelessly.

And don't worry about being stupid - I'm ugly but I just get on with it!

if you have wireless enabled pc's/laptops - use the wireless router.
if you just have a standalone pc - just use the 'normal cable' router.

i dont think you can use BOTH....

i'd go for the wireless anyday!

dont forget to secure it - unless you feel charitable!

(as i do! My internet is open to all and sundry ( - but all your surfing and keystrokes are logged!) heh!

They still need both for wireless (I'm thinking you meant router for wireless and modem for wired connection?). Main Virgin cable from outside into modem, then a modem cable from modem to router (then cable from router to comp to set up router). The router is a 'router' not a modem.

I think what OP is saying is that theyve got a standard blue modem and a white netgear wireless router. Standard Virgin equipment.

Question is... do you need wireless or can you make do with the blue modem plugged straight into the back of your pc and that is it. If so then i wouldnt worry about connecting up the wireless router, unless you wanna run more than 1 pc or anything wireless like a laptop, as this way is much more efficient and tbh i find it much faster. Wireless can be very laggy at times and no way near as good as hard wired period !

Basically for just one home pc if the blue modem is right next to it just use the RJ45 ethernet cable straight into the back of the pc from the blue modem. No need for the router at that stage. If you do need more then connect up the white router.
