Hi, got my xbox last week -just setting it up tonight -i am interested in xbox live but unsure how to connect it all up.
I have pc upstairs with adsl router , laptop is connected wirelessly downstairs ( BUT someone else set it all up for me and it works perfectly - so don''t want to muck anything up !!)
So in VERY simple terms -how do i set it up to use live please.

A live starter kit?? :?

You need an xbox live subscription to play on xbox live... Then you either need to connect the ethernet that came with it to your router or buy a wireless adapter, which attaches to the back of the xbox via usb... & then you enter the key code for your router to allow it access.

I got something in the box telling me i get 1 months gold subscription free .
If i connect to the router that means i have to play on my PC Monitor i think as the PC is upstairs connected to the router . Laptop is dell -downstairs and connected wirelessly.

Connect your Xbox to your laptop via cross over ethernet cable

Might be more to it than that though if it doesn't connect first time, like assigning your laptop an IP in IP Properties page usually 192.168.1.101 depending on the make of your router.

You also need to purchase a live starter kit.

huh -thats for the old xbox the starter kit

Anyone else help-just had another look at it and it has HDMI socket at back and the cable looks like a scart cable with a catch on it that says hdtv and tv -is this ok to use and put the switch to hdtv (42inch plasma hdtv but not with freeview as i have sky and a freeview hd dvd recorder ) or do i need an ordinary hd lead ? I have a spare one if i need it. This is for connecting to the tv by the way -i know thats not the way to get online (lol) I haven''t got to that yet !!

Did you buy an elite? If so that comes with a hdmi to hdmi cable, if you bought a premium with hdmi console then it doesn't and you need to supply your own hdmi to hdmi...

Someone got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning

She's posted on here before many times asking about xbox 360's and ps3's...

She wants something simple... She hasn't even plugged the xbox into her tv yet... The simplest thing is plugging the ethernet cable directly into her router. If the router's too far away then the next simplest is to buy a wireless adapter and stick that in!

Thanks everyone -sorry should have said its xbox premium with hdmi - didn't get the PS3 in the end -got this and just bought a wii from Amazon that came yesterday.
Thanks sadiebabes -yes i want something simple . That sound like a good idea - i may try in on the pc monitor first as its a 24" ultra sharp dell .
Looked at links above -am i right in thinking if i use it upstairs with monitor - i have pc on and just plug ethernet cable into xbox and other end to the router and thats it -no configurations or anything ?

You can connect with either a Wifi Adapter (only the microsoft one works) or an ethernet cable. Both ways are good but wifi kit is expensive and ethernet has cables trailing everywhere.

If you decide to go wireless you need any WEP/WPA codes that your router requires, wep is usually on a sticker on the router. If you go wired you can pick up a cheap long cable from an Amazon seller or Ebay for a few quid.

Also as far as live if you have a premium it comes with a 30 day live gold trial. Create a silver account and log in to live, then at some point near the end of the setup it should offer you the free upgrade. You can redeem the 30 day trial on three different silver gamertags (must be new silver for each), so thats really 90 days of gold.

EDIT: I use a monitor with VGA so I don't know about HDMI. As far as the router it should work straight away with ethernet.

Hi Ungreat -thanks for that -yes, thats what came with it.
Is that right about the wired -if i just put the cable into the xbox and then into the router with pc on i dont have to configure anything - thats only if i go wireless?

I have two 360's connected to a BT home hub router. Mine is wireless and needed some configuring, my brothers is ethernet and from what I can remember is just plug and play.

Some games may require stuff like opening NAT settings but I never did that so I don't think it matters.
