Console gaming, is it worth it?

saayinla Avatar

Am not a hardcore gamer, but i certainly like to play games ones in a while. had a psp previously but I sold it now. I have a pc capable of playing games almost perfectly and i have quite a number of games as well, assasin's creed, crysis, kat & lynch, COD4 etc. But is it really worth having the PS3?.

While I have a toshiba HD-A2(now multi-region) for hd dvds, even though I dont actually buy much of those, I still prefer to download hd content rather than having physical discs.

I have been looking for a very good reason to buy the PS3 for a while but ve been resisting all along but the urge is still there, even though I know that if I ended up buying one, I ll eventually sell it off soon.

Am a technology freak and I ll love to have one but I need a very good reason for buying, anyone want to help me out?

Do you honestly think you will play it once you have it? Or would you play it for a while then get bored of it then sell it on? Are there games on the PS3 you would want to have?

LOL! Another one to add to the list. All Xbox 360 gamers say the same thing. That's because they know the PS3 is better than the Xbox 360.
Mate go for a PS3. I bought one thinking it would be okay. ITS FANTASTIC!!!
Hope that's given you some help

Well duuh.. It came out before so its likely to have more. In reality most games are coming out on both now. Each consoles has their own exclusive deals.

The reason why xbox has more games is because it's been out for about a year longer. All the proper games for PS3 are just starting to be released.
Let me give you an example. All Xbox people say HALO 3 is amazing and it's best game ever. I've got it... It's average. But with PS3 they're are loads of titles that beat xbox games easily. Gears of war is good though. Only proper game for xbox

Well i have had all 3 consoles and I have to say I prefer the PS3 by far. Everything you could want is all in the PS3 - WiFi, Internet browser, free online gaming, Blu Ray, etc.etc
The thing with the xbox is this whole buying everything serpate- Lets say you want to play wireless. You need to fork out £50-£60 to get a wireless adapter. If you have a wireless controller you then need to spend money on batteries or buy a charging station.

The fan for the xbox is very loud aswell which annoys the hell out of me when I play late at night. My PS3 is silent as it gets so I can play with the volume down low enough and not wake anyone up. Whereas if I played the xbox late at night not only the fan would wake everyone up the volume would need to be turned up too.
To actually play online with the xbox you need to buy a subscription costing between £10-£30 for 3-12months, but its free on the PS3.
There are no faults I can think of with the PS3 other than the 40gbs have having some disk read error problems, BUT only a very small percentage (and even at that, its usually the console owners fault - carrying the console with a disk in it etc etc)
Hope this helps

I really don't care why, the fact is in my opinion it does have better games and is a better console, which is why i'm recommending it.

I used to be a hardcore PC gamer but now I hardly use my PC for gaming I have a 360, a Wii and up untill 3 months ago a PS3.

Why?

Well to play a game like CoD4 for example I would probably need to upgrade my PC every two to three years, my curent PC would need upgrading to play games such as Crysis and Assasins creed. With a console I can reduce the amount of money I need to shell out on continuously upgrading my PC by paying about £250 for a console that will more than likley have a working life of 4-5 years at the least.

For the most part games are the same price as PC and are of a similar graphical quality in the early stages of console life. Online play as come on tremendously in the past 3-4 years and the Xbox 360 online service is outstanding and as good as any PC online gaming, although you have to pay for it (cheapest about £22 for a year).

Which console? (Dont get sucked into pointless Fanboi arguments)

Well the Wii is great if you have freinds who will play it with you, not so good if your on your own in that respect but there are some excellent games for it that are incredibly unique and addictive. Graphically it's at the same standard as late PS2/Xbox games but the graphics shouldnt matter that much on this type of game.

PS3 is a solid platform that I could not fault when I had one, obviously the built in BR player is a bonus but I found the console lacking in game support and also the online play although free was vastly inferior to the 360 for various reasons. The online play is supposedly going to be improved soon, and there are a host of top class games now on the way.

The 360 (IMO) is the best of the three at least for now. Online play is supreme, shed loads of games out for it and lots more on the way, the only black mark is early release console reliability which has really marred the reputation of the 360. But new compnents are fitted to new consoles which should improve reliability dramatically and those with the older version are protected with a 3 year warrantee. Graphically it's just below the level of the PS3 but not really not noticable.

Dont you mean that 360 gamers say that cos its true and all the ps3 gamers are jealous.
ps3 has one advantage over the 360, and thats blu-ray.
Simple truth is if you want to play games buy a 360, if you want to watch hd movies buy a ps3.

You will prob find that the 360 does have a bigger range of games, but alot of the bigger range will include Fifa 06,07,08. Madden, 06,07,08. NHL, 06,07,08.

The ps3 actually has better scored games.. as show here :

No, maybe you want me to be jealous. But until the ps3 actually gets some games worth playing, I be happy sticking with the 360.

Also one last thought before I loose my interest in this debate, why is it that every multiplatform game seems to score better on the 360??

OP, as demonstrated by the graph that has appeared and some of the discussion - people will actually sit down and defend a console online against other online opponent console owners on an internet forum. Facts do not matter to them, they are called Fanboi's, they are easily spotted because they have to justify their purchase of one type of console by declaring any other console and all it's assosiated games as inferior to theirs.

It's part of console gaming that I hate, but it is something that you have to get used to.

OP, check my homepage for a multi format onsole gaming forum.

consoles dont come close to pc games for adults. Conole games are great for kids though, got any of them on the way? if not stick with your pc for games and update components every few years.
#26
Each platform has its merits, I just prefer to enjoy the game regardless of the platform - shame so many people deliberately limit themselves. I own and use all the consoles and a couple of PCs regularly.

Same goes for PC and console gaming, each platform offers various titles that can't be found on the other. Currently still enjoying Dawn of War (particularly looking forward to the second one) which I wouldn't want to play on a console but on the other hand I have found the increasing amount of work to get a PC game running frustrating at times. My main preference for consoles is co-op gaming, I find it's a lot more fun sitting together on the same screen/machine rather than split over different PCs (which is impractical), same for multiplayer in general.

I would have to disagree, I have 100 freinds on my 360 freinds list who are all 20-30 who all play the latest games with other adults. The fact that console gaming is 'for kids' is a myth, console gaming is for anyone and everyone, the game you play usually determines the age range of your fellow gamers.

The reality is even the ps3 is nearly 3 yrs behind the pc in terms of hardware technology.
If u like most already own a pc the cost of hw upgrades to play games is much less than the cost of consoles in terms on TCOO
Total Cost of Ownership is offset by the fact the you probably already have most of the items required for gaming on pc and running costs in buying locked more expensive games.
I spent £800 on my pc about two and a half years ago, thats prob Equiv to £600 now in that time i've done no upgrades and it plays all pc games to a satisfactory level.
In same time i could have bout a xbox(how much 2.5yrs ago?) paid avg £10.00 more per game (bout 20 a year) then paid how much for a 360? Plus more 10 per game and all the time still having to maintain a PC for work. internet printing etc
tbh the cost is pretty much the same but the consoles lag in technology and i felt tend to be limited in game types, fps are so slooow if you've ever played with mouse for aiming, decent rts games are impossible to handle at without a keyboard etc
and yes u can get all the toys like wirless gamepads for pcs as well as steering wheels and flight yokes biggest influence i would say is whether u intend to use a tv or a monitor

im 28 and half of my mates have a xbox, yes they are playable and easy but when you play top knotch pc game equivelents there isnt a comparason. Take battlefield 2. Ive been playing that for years on the pc and now all my mates are into it on the xbox, i had to have a go and it was a joke! same with halo, fairly point and shoot cartoon style. Then look at the likes or crysis on the pc. Ok its a more expencive system and highly frustrating when it starts becoming old but thats not the issue.

Cornish I cant speak for the latest PC games because My PC will probably not play them at a decent graphics level so I dont buy them but I can tell you that CoD4 is a brilliant game and I have a lot of fun on it, on a console and it is effectivley the same game as the PC version save mouse support. I'm not saying console gaming is better than PC gaming but I have the same amount of fun playing on my console as I did when I had a top end PC.

Gotta disagree with you on the price of Games. With the odd exception, PC games tend to be cheaper than their console equivalents and often by a bg margin. They will also reach budget prices much quicker and again, at a cheaper price point.

I know what you mean about having to upgrade though. It's expensive and a pain in the behind. But then with a bit of careful planning, it shouldn't need doing that often, and lets not forget it's not long before the PS3 and Xbox 360 will also be replaced and all that equipment you forked out on will be sat gathering dust. Also, the expense of upgrading is offset by cheaper games, the fact that PCs can be used for more than just games, the fact that so much PC content (including some reasonable games) is available for free, as well as many other factors (such as like you say, not having to pay to play on-line for most games). On top of that, many PC games are simply better than their console equivalenst due to the extra power they have, etc.

I've been a PC Gamer for 20+ years and must admit I have been thinking about getting a PS3 or 360 myself recently. My main reason for this is the types of games I like to play. The PC has a wide variety of great games but in recent years certain areas have become lacking in quality titles. I like racing games and there just isn't he equivalent of your Forza's, PGRs and Gran Turismos on the PC. Sure we have more hardcore simulators and we have the odd attempt at that style of game (Need For Speed series), but none of them are up to the standards of the consule top tear titles. The same goes for fighting games. I can't remember the last time there was a decent fighting game on the PC, be it a boxing game, wrestling game or your tekken style of game. However if you are into say FPSs or RTS, or RPGs then there really isn't any need to switch IMHO.

The graph was to prove a factual point :p

I actually own a PS3 and have a xbox 360 in my living room, the only games ive not been able to play on the ps3 were bioshock and halo 3. You also make out that fanboyism is only prevalent on consoles.. its in all walks of like ati vs nvidia Mercades vs BMW, people always will defend their purchases.

Consoles are behind PCs but the number of people utilising the technology you are talking about is pretty small. The reason i stopped playing PC games is that my computer had come to a point where i might as well scrap it as i would have to replace everything else just to get the new graphics to not be bottlenecked by everything else. Consoles have a pretty level playing field in that everyone is on the same system (obviously the tv makes a difference)

Depends how you buy your games, I tend to import from Play Asia as much as possible meaning games are no more than £30 if region free. And if you shop around you can reduce your costs a bit more on UK region games. You could also argue that the trade in market is much larger for console games, meaning the overall cost of owning a game is lower.

But your right, in general games on the PC are cheaper and reduce price cheaper.
