Guys I hope I am not opening up a can of worms here but..... I have a Sony PS2 and for some time now I have been wanting a new console but I cannot decide between the Wii, X-Box and the PS3. Now in an ideal world i would buy all 3 but that is just not possible (plus the wife would do me in!) Any tips? good and bad for each machine? I like war and golf games but the Wii has me curious and i suppose the wife could use it as well......lol!

the Wii is great if you live in a student house, or somewhere where you play games with a lot of people all the time.

the PS3 is great if you dont want a separate blu-ray player

the xbox 360 is great if you want an excellent games console, with exellent online mulitplayer functionailtyand the biggest game selections. Get one, you won't regret it.

If you are serious about gaming I wouldn't sugges the Wii as a primary console. Whilst it is good in a drunken party sort of way, there aren't many killer apps that are worth playing. A lot of the games are pretty ****** and rely on the gimmick of the wii-mote.

You are best off with either a PS3 or a 360. But to go any further than that will lead to some fanboys getting in on this. I have a 360 and I'm happy with it. With the deals on at the moment, if money is a little tight it is a good console to get. Under £200 with 4/5 games was the last deal I saw posted here. If online gaming interests you, get a 360.

I have all 3 and feel independent here

The xbox is the better games console - its graphics are better and a better line up of games

The PS3 is more of a media centre, it plays blu ray saving you £200, the games are ok, and there are some exclusives which are good

The Wii is novelty I feel, I loved it for 4 weeks, and haven't played it since January

Hope this helps

TBH I think Wii has limited games for what you want...

Personally i would go for the 360...I have a 360 currently and I love it, I intend to get a PS3 at some point but tbh I dont see the need right now...nothing to make me go out and get it...however if you do want a Blu Ray player as well then defo go for the PS3...PS3 is more of a Home Entertainment Unit whereas the 360 is a Games console

If you go for a 360 I would 100% recommend Gears Of War 1 & 2....FANTASTIC games (worth buying a 360 just for them)...then add COD4 & COD5 and your sorted...then Tiger Woods for your 18 holes of fun and your all set...

Whichever you go for if you want a War game YOU NEED Call of Duty 4 and/or 5...games are great but the online is where its at and the game pays for itself continually...

However PS3 Network is free whereas you ahve to pay for a years subscription to XBOX LIVE...however majority say that XBL is much better with greater numbers than the PS3 Network...

I am a PC gamer so I guess my opinion is (I would consider) unbiased because I am so biased towards a PC lol.

When it comes to consoles though I think the 360 is the way to go. Budget wise and gaming wise. I think it is the 'true' console of the bunch.

PS3's cost is a huge factor, Bluray being a large chunk of a PS3 - I would consider it more of an entertainment piece of kit than a true console. If you don't really want or need the Blu-ray aspect then personally I don't think the extra cost can be justified.

The Wii is great if you have kids or a large family. It is a multiplayer entertainment consoles, for singleplayer use I guess it can be quite boring.

So I think it comes down to what you really want; a gaming console, an entertainment machine or something for the kids/family/friends.

Get a 360 if you don't mind regularly returning it for RROD problems!

Get a PS3 if your house and wallet will fit it!
#8
the graphics on ps2 and wii are the same, you'd be better upgrading to a high definition console.

lol @ all the microsoft fanboys getting in there!

Get what your friends have.

No point shelling out hundreds only to find all your mates are on another console.

The new 360's dont suffer with RROD...currently I hear from my friend whos kinda in the business twice as many PS3 are being returned now due to HDD/Blu Ray players than 360's

OP - chance to win one here, worth a crack: http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3644693#post3644693

The Red Ring Of Death has been pretty much eliminated now with the latest batch of consoles shipping from shops. Unless you are buying an old 360 second hand you don't really have anything to worry about. And if you buy from GAME in my experience it very easy to swap your a faulty console for a brand new one if it is within the 1 year warranty period. Just get one. As people above have said, the 360 is a games console (but can also stream movies and music from your PC) whereas the PS3 is primarily a media center with the games console as a secondary perk.

War games wise, as echoed above, COD4/5 and Gears of War 1/2 are all great games. Mass Effect is a really good space action rpg/shooter and there are some great racing games out like PGR3/4, Forza2 and GRID which are all worth playing. It also helps that alot of the older 360 back catalogue can be had for very cheap both online and from the FS section on this website

There was someone on here the other day with a RROD Elite...

Maybe it's less of a problem now but almost everyone I know with a 360 has had it fail - one guy THREE times...

Just don't trust them. Oh, and when I did have one it was the noisiest thing in the room - clearly audible over projector and game audio...

Yeah but Elites are not new! its the new 60GB thats updated...eventually all of them will be but you have to remember if it fails within 3 years they sort it and you get another 3 years warranty...if it packs up because of something else then you only get 1 year, same as PS3...and the only prob with the 360 is RROD whereas PS3 has known Blu Ray and HDD probs...

(and before anyone attacks me for being a so called 'fanboy' read my 1st comment on this thread thoroughly!!!)

TBH I know peeps say its loud but I dont hear mine anymore than my mates PS3?!

Do the wife in and then buy all 3 :w00t:

Not really. Everyone I know who has a PS3 bought it as a Blu-Ray player with the games being a nice perk. The same way as a lot of people who bought the PS2 when it first came out bought it as it was the cheapest DVD player on the market. The fact it played games as well was another nice bonus.

It can't be that stupid a comment considering the the game attach rate for the xbox 360 is far higher than both the PS3 and the Wii.

I'm not a fanboy (if a console has good games that I can't play anywhere else, then I'll buy it), and I'll happily admit the 360 has its problems. I'm on my 4th console. But since I got it in March of this year I haven't had any problems with it. Also, like on the PS3 you can now install the games to the HDD so noise isn't such an issue.

Unless you are desperate to play the few decent PS3 exclusives, a 360 is a good choice. Please come up with a convincing argument to the contrary as I want a PS3, I'm just waiting for a decent enough reason to splash nearly £300 on one :whistling:

Except for LittleBigPlanet and Drakes Fortune i'm getting my PS3 primarily for the Blu-Ray.

I've had two 360's die with RROD one replaced in-store and one repaired by MS, didn't cost me anything so was a minor inconvenience at worst.

not becuase of probs, mainly becuase the elite and pro are better value as if he's going online with it you then need to purchase additional hardware.

This isnt the case. Most problems occurred with the very early (pre-HDMI) consoles regardless of whether they were Arcade or Hard Drive bundles.

I had a pre-HDMI console that lasted over a year before any fault occurred, I replaced it with an Arcade console HDMI and its been running great now for over 6 months and its on at least 12 hours a day most days.

The newer version consoles are of better quality and build so I wouldnt be too concerned about probs with Arcade consoles. PS3 also have their probs too ;-)

I use my console for several things, I hooked up a speaker system to it and now use it as my media centre to play music (dont need a hifi anymore), play movies (both music and movies are stored on my PC and now I stream them wirelessly to my TV via xbox360) so I sold all my DVDs and CDs, dont need them anymore. That leaves the disc player to have games in and I store the current game on the hard drive (i currently use 120GB drive so plenty of space) to prolong the life of the 360 disc player, so playing games is 99% silent now. sometimes use messenger to chat with other users/friends.

Can also download movies in HD and play via 360, so only reason for me to go to PS3 would be to use the Blu-ray, but as I dont have a great need for DVDs anymore then theres literally no need for me to switch to PS3 at all. I'm quite happy to stick with my 360 and if it does go kapoot with RROD then I know I can get it repaired for free or just buy a new one for around £100 compared to the expensive price of the PS3.

BTW...COD4 ROCKS!

Arcade, Premium etc are the terms used for the package being sold, e.g. Arcade package comes with memory card rather than hard drive which is why its cheaper.

Jasper refers to the technical design of the xbox360 itself. Jasper designed boxes are the new and apparently more stable boxes which have only recently been put out on to the shelves, so you'd be looking to get one of these Jasper designed boxes. Basically Jasper is the new technical design which was released in order to overcome earlier design flaws/problems that caused RROD. So the theory would be that these newer design models are more stable and robust.

Supposedly a new 360 Arcade with 256mb internal storage preloaded with the new dashboard is on the way.
#33
Sorry to be a pain but how will i know its a "jasper" model when i come to buy and last if not least what is a good package to get just now? or will i be better waiting until January 2009?:whistling:

Is Atari Lynx a new deodorant........?!

I had the same porblem as op not long ago, these were some of the things i took into consideration.

Ps3 has built in wi-fi.

Ps3 takes any Sata laptop drive upgrade.

Ps3 is quieter.

Ps3 has Blu-ray.

Ps3 online gaming is free.

Ps3 has had hdmi as standard from the start.

Blu-ray beat hd-dvd.

You can install linux on ps3 and use it as a PC as well as using it for gaming.

Ps3 has Bluetooth and you can use any mobile phone headset with it.

Sony "finished" the console insted of doing a carp job and selling to the public asap.

Blu-rays can hold 50gb of data........ the 360 uses dvd's for games (8.5gb) max, in the future when when the devs have had more time, just think of the size of games and all the detail that could be put on a 50gb disk!

also lol at the xbox getting an fugly external blu-ray drive in near future...........
#39
I'm lucky to have all three and without a shadow of doubt I'd recommend the PS3, but mind you the 360's so cheap these days could be a good deal if your on a budget (but you'll probably pay for it in the end - on-line fees & RROD)
