If you have a contactless card . You may want to try this before hand to make sure it works with your card. Also to make sure the times etc are in level with your budget. If you get this wrong then you will end up paying charges etc.

If you have a contactless card then depending on how long you need the money for. In theory you can have multiples of £30 available in your account and you can spend this several times over.

The way this works is. Some companies without naming them. I mean major shops when paying by contactless will take upto 6 days to take the money from your account. Also as a fact these same companies will not hold these payments untill processed.

If you pay by chip and pin. This will automatically put a hold on however much you have paid. Although the money is sitting in your account. You cannot use it. However with contactless some shops will immediately hold the payment. Where as others will not. They will not even hold a quid. The payments then come of after a certain amount of days. I have seen this being tried. It works but you need to like i say know what sort of times are involved. The same as paying for petrol/diesel via a automated pump.
For example :
Tesco will take 3 Days to debit your account with the amount. However £1 will be held .
Sainsburys does the same but can take 3-4 days and also over bank holidays this extends their time further.
Morrisons will take a £1. and take 4 days to debit and even five depending on if you filled up during the early morning or late evening.
Shell will debit the follwoing morning . Sometimes 2-3 days later but will hold £1.00
Bp + Esso the following day depending on where it is.
People are going to slate me. If i am even helping one person it is worth it.

The coop contactless payment never shows. they take 5-7 days in collecting it.

Sainsburys again 3-4 days before collection.

Tescos 2 days

Poundland etc 3-5 days.

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

I gave up on my contactless lloyds card.

I always insert it now & do my pin regardless of the amount.

Personally I like to know how much money is available in my current account at all times without random amounts coming out 2 or 3 days later that I had forgot about.

my son has serious money issues stemming from gambling, he owes a lot out so was dumbfounded when NatWest let him open a new bank account and gave him a chip and pin card. he was like a kid in a sweet shop, never had a penny in the account but because of the chip and pin and as NatWest told him they have to pay retailers even though his account was at the time at zero he now owes them £1190 and is at the default stage.

Yeah I noticed that this happens with Halifax also happens when you pay at the pump at petrol stations too, personally OP i think your post is irresponsible, but each there own.. I am trying to figure out what kind of emergency requires you to spend under £30.00 at a major shop? McDonalds? 20 Regal King Size?

and i'm stumped to think of an emergency involving Poundland!

Better advice would be budget better.

If you use Android Pay the funds are taken instantly from your account,

Not sure why OP is getting slammed here by some for just pointing out something that happens. It may help someone who is short and wants to put fuel in the car the day before payday, for example!

Maybe this will help customers in the long run. Regardless of how you look at it. Chip and pin will in several cases not show as a transaction being processed until the day they debit. Co-op,Poundland,Poundstrecher,Wilko, to name but the least.

This is why the system is flawed. You can for every £1 in your account withdraw upto £100 in fuel. So if somebody gets funny they can take thousands of pounds worth of fuel and pay nowt. We were told chip and pin is safer. We were then told contactless is safe as well.

This is little more than gambling without the possible returns. The only thing that your suggestion will lead to is getting people in to unnecessary debt as you cannot be certain that what you have posted is 100% correct.

How this thread is still live is beyond me. It is promoting reckless irresponsibility and giving terrible advice.

If you are happy to play roulette with your finances then that's fine, but please don't encourage others to do so.

Updates. Nisa are now debiting the amount immediately . Asda is debiting the following day except over a weekend. Morrissons are taking 2 days. Tescos's are still taking 4 days. Coop are debiting the same day and withdrawing 2-3 days later.
