Try Handbrake:

I have just started doing it. (albeit ripping the DVDs to full widescreen resolution MP4 but the principle is the same)
I use ANYDVD to rip the video
then TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress to encode into MP4.

Handbrake, without a doubt is the best.

I use MacTheRipper to rip the DVD then handbrake to encode it

Hmm tried this , it was simple and quick but it seems to shave 4 mins off the end of the DVD making a small 20 mins camcorder video even smaller at 16 mins?!!

Anyone know why it would be doing this?

Giving handbrake a go now, looks quite handy!
