Angry Coronation Street viewers have complained to Ofcom and ITV after a character made "anti-Christian" remarks during an episode on Easter Sunday.

The broadcast watchdog said it received 23 complaints over Ken Barlow referring to the faith as "superstition" and God as a "supernatural being".

ITV said it received about 100 complaints over the remarks.

It added the soap was set in modern society and "represents views from all sides of the religious spectrum".

In the soap, while the Barlow family were preparing to go to church, Ken - played by William Roache - questioned his son Peter on why he was allowing his grandson, Simon, to be "indoctrinated" by the church.

He's a bad one that Ken Barlow
#4
who would complain at this??? If they are that bothered by comments like that why are they even watching corrie??????
#5
haha ken barlow as a bad ass who'd have thought it!
banned#6
How sheltered must Corrie viewers be if this offended them though? Maybe we should have a bit more like this to de-sensitize them a bit.
#7
Viva ken barlow!
#8
go for it kenneth

will come a time soon when we will all be scared to talk, in fear of offending someone!

I agree. All that happened was ken voiced his opinion on religion. So what? Can people not have an opinion?
#11
God bovvers God bovverers chuck?
#12
It was a deliberate cheap shot against people who won't fight back. Corrie isn't exactly going to give them the chance to put their side of the story is it? And can you imagine the Corrie writers being brave enough to say that Islam is "indoctrinating" people?

The timing was pretty bad for a dig at Christianity. Easter Sunday is arguably the most holy and important day in the Christian calender. I can understand why some Christians might be annoyed at that even though I don't think it would bother any of the Christians I know.
#13
that ken barlow tisk.. has always been a very naughty man.
#14
100 complaints probably isnt too high an amount considering how many people watch corrie.

Maybe these people need reminding that its a tv programme .. and uh... ken barlow and his opinion.. don't actually exist!

Then the Christians should fight back. Stand up and issue a few bomb threats.

Or accept that Ken's right.

Why is it you are always behind digs at Christians. You seem to be very intolerant and hate filled and I am biting back as I am quite sick of it. You are offensive, not by the view points you have as I being a Christian actually believe that people are allowed to have different view points but you seem to think that if people don't believe the same as you then they are wrong and should be laughed at, run down and spoken of as if they are idiots. It is intimidating and as bad as what Jade did to Shilpa Shetty.

You pick on Christians for the simple reason as they are seen as easy targets because they don't bite back whereas you don't seem to have digs at anyone else. The funny thing is you are the one who is judging us, we don't judge you and the snipes I've seen on here all this week are based on stereotypes.

That's your frame of reference???

I don't single out Christians, they just come to my attention more by complaining about stuff like this. If it makes you feel better, I think anyone who believes in superstition is fair game. Christians, Muslims, Scientologists, Mormons, people who believe in psychics, rabid nationalists, clueless marxists, sandal-wearing liberals etc.

Good on you for biting back though.

I can't make up my mind if that comment is merely naive or deliberately obtuse.
Are you seriously saying that it's okay to be offensive on TV if it's a fictional character who says the offensive thing? Would it be okay for the Ken Barlow character to make a racist or homophobic comment for example?

If Ken Barlow was real, he would find the law would take issue with him making racist or homophobic comments.

there are shows that show these, hollyoaks for example have a storyline at the moment involving the bullying of an Asian girl
#35
Maybe people just need to lighten up, if somthing said in a soap is the biggest problem in their life, then they are lucky

yes of course... its FICTION.

Do you restrict yourself to reading and watching things you AGREE with?

I enjoy horror films... I do not desire to kill anybody.

I watch the news... some of it repulses and disgusts me.

I read books that are intellectual, educational and entertaining, that draw from many cultures. I have interests in anthropology and sociology.

Do I feel upset by some of the things I read or see? Undoubtedly.

Do I think that just because my opinions and sensibilities are different to the authors that they should not be written or produced? Absolutely not.

Tolerate and learn from our differences, not scream for war because we disagree.

You've deliberately avoided the point. If a TV show deliberately insulted gays or blacks then the PC brigade would be out for blood and the shows writers and producers would probably be called to account. Similarly if a show gets too personal it will receive censure (like the Jonathan Ross case). Just because the characters are fictional doesn't mean that the writers should be able to create content which targets people for abuse.

The PC brigade doesn't exist. It's just an invisible enemy to blame things on.

Your point is also confused. A TV show in itself would be hard pushed to insult someone. What it would require is a host or a character to do so. Then you have to take into account which character said it and their standing within the show, e.g. Cartman's anti-semitism in South Park.

Also, people should be made to think when they watch tv. Their views should be challenged and if that offends them, turn over. If your views aren't strong enough to withstand the withering blows of the Coronation Street writers or even a person on the internet, they really aren't strong enough to place any faith in.

It all rather misses the point of what the character in Coronation Street actually said - was it actually untrue?

It gets less untrue as you get older.

Believing in that nonsense is a good insurance policy...just in case.
