Cough medicine, advice needed please

I´ve had a bad cough for quite a few days now.
It seems to be deep and i rattle and whistle at night (well, my lungs do of course)
I´m also having trouble breathing because of this at night mainly
which means I don´t get much sleep.
I haven´t really been sick since I moved over here 3 years ago, so don´t know
what medicine is good for this kinda thing. ( I know the german makes and stuff but that doesn´t help me over here)
At the moment I take Lemsip Cold & Flu Capsules Max Strength and Benylin Syrup for chesty coughs.
What´s good to get all the crap off my chest and help me get better?

I know you´ll probably say call the doctor but they very likely won´t even see me as
everyone seems to be told they have swineflu even though a cold or the "normal" flu have the same symptoms. And to be honest I don´t wanna take medicine for something I don´t have especially cuz it seems to make people feel even worse.

Thanks in advance for the help :)

I used Covonia night time, you are only allowed 1 dose a night as it makes you drowsy. it's the only cough medicine that has ever worked for me.

In all honesty if you can hear wheezing you need to see doc. It could be a chest infection.
No cough med will clear that up, you will need anti-biotics.
Just ring them say your wheezing, difficulty taking in air etc.. they will see you as an emergency.

They´re not open before 5pm today and I doubt I could get there as we don´t have a car
and I don´t think I can walk that far as my legs feel weak too.
Do you think they´d even see me? I thought they pretty much don´t let any people with
even just flu-like symptoms in anymore.

I went to my doctors today, there were signs up eveywhere on the way in, saying go home and ring them instead if you have flu symptoms

It sounds to me like you may have a chest infection, or the start of one. You need to ring the doctor as if you have you will need antibiotics, nothings from the chemist will help with that. In the mean time try a steam facial (very hot water in a bowl with a towel over your head)to loosen any phlegm.

Cough medicine doesn't really work... It'll sooth your throat and fill you up with sugar and makes you feel better for a while... (worked for a Gp a while back, he said a simple linctis is just as effective as the expensive ones... although I tend to use covornia (Can't spell it ) I find the viler the taste better the medicine seems to work lol)

I'm a nurse, and it does sound like you have the beginnings of a chest infection, even if viral in origin, it sounds like you do need some antibiotics and /or steroids. Ring the GP, they may do a telephone consultation with you and send a script to a local chemist.
Hope you feel better soon

I would ring the surgery and tell them you think its a chest infection, they know who is genuine and the doctor may call you back ( mine does), then they may leave a prescription at reception for you.Worth a try as you can then get someone to pick it up for you.

I know that probably the majority of people will not consider it important to get to a doctor even if you are wheezing. You may be perfectly right that you normally recover. Its the one time that you dont that may get you to reconsider your approach. If you are unlucky enough to get an infection that does not clear, it gets serious very quickly if it is chest/lung related. Can immobilise you totally. Not trying to scare you but best to at least phone the doc.

If you are wheezing you need to see the GP.It is probably a viral wheeze but you still need to get checked out. They will see you urgently as the reason Swine flu is so dangerous is because it penetrates the lung tissue deeper than a normal flu like type virus would. So flu like symtoms+ wheeze= GP telephone consultation.

Considered bad practice to prescribe antibiotics without being examined.

The issues are very simple. Cough medicines do not work. You are having problems breathing and have a wheeze. You are assuming you won't get seen but you have not tried.

You can attend a walk in centre or the surgery. You need to be examined, asthma also needs to be excluded.

I always find that juice of half a lemon with 2-3 tablespoons of honey in a mug of almost boiling water sooths a cough. Hopefully it will help until you can see your GP. Best wishes.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Called the doc earlier. He called back, told him my symptoms, he asked questions etc
My hubby can go in at 5 and pick up a prescription for me.

I don't really rate cough mixtures,my Mum moans at me when kids got a cough, that I won't buy Benylin etc,as I don't think they work, like shift it any quicker, mine only really coughed a few days. My Mum mad she buys alsorts and the thing is she smokes,so it's the smoking that's causing the cough or prolonging it.

As others said you might have a chest infection.I know when my partner is bad with asthma wheezing and and stuff that doesn't shift, usually he has a chest infection and I can also tell by his bad breath,if it's been really bad,he normally come back from GP with steroids.

Steroids treat acute exacerbation of asthma or COPD. Can also be given with antibiotics as a precaustion but if steroids used, it is the chest condition that is the problem and not infection

Yeh well it's probably a mixture of both for him when he is like this, and I don't think GP's hand out steroids freely, but I know if he's got chest infection cos his breath smells bad lol.
