Hi there, i want to move to leicester, dont know what area i should be buying a house in. I want to move in an area with good schools as i have got a toddler. All i can find on the internet is that oadby seems to be the only area that has outstanding schools. Anyone could advise of any other good areas with good schools please!!!!!!!!!!!! Help.

Also i am selling my house... any tips on selling it quickly and saving money by private. Anyone sold their house privately?

Why choose Leicester?

Oadby is definitely the area to be in! although it is quite big, the local primaries are all good although given the choice there is one that is not quite as good as the others, the schools have a pretty strict policy on catchment for places so you will need to be careful.
There is a big difference between 'city' and 'county' in Leicester and also in its education provision.Oadby is county and primary schools go to year 5, then children attend 'middle' school' and move onto 'college' at year 9.There has been some talk recently of changing the system.

What is your budget, and what type of house are you looking for, as Oadby is expensive(relatively).

You''ll find a few around that price. I grew up in Wigston, which is next door to Oadby, it's a bit cheaper but a nice area too.

Do you know people in Leicester, as it would be best to talk to them, and possibly visit for a few days. It's a huge step to make.

Hopefully the OP has no problem with Asian people, if he/she has, then they are best to stay out of Leicestershire full stop.

Apart from Oadby I would steer clear of the city and its suburbs itself. Lots of nice parts of Leicestershire though. I live out in Market Bosworth and it is a great rea to live, although I am a bit biased as I grew up there.

Wouldn't move into Leicester itself unless you know the area that you are moving into. There's some lovely towns/villages north of Leicester, such as Anstey & especially Rothley, although they might be quite expensive.

Thought I'd make a post as I live in Leicester also.

Oadby is expensive but it does have good resources, shops, schools etc but depends what you want for your budget.

Leicester is bigger than you think to be honest, the inner city can look a bit run down but there is a lot of re-generation work going on at the moment. The county area is very nice I think, Market Bosworth has been mentioned but Oakham and Rutland which is on the outskirts is very nice; again expensive.

Leicester is very multi cultral which is fantastic. Belgrave road is very asian orientated and adds character to the city. Places like St Matthews are very run down but everywhere has its bad places.

Melton also has nice areas but Melton is about 40 mins from Oadby. Market Harborough has some nice places also and is situated between leicester and northants.

Evington is also a popular area and has recently had a brand new college built (Judgemedow) There are other places such as Hamilton, Thurmaston and Syston which also CAN be nice, but in terms of housing costs, a similiar house in Hamilton compared to Syston is about £30,000 difference, this is mainly because Hamitlon is a newer estate and is not as built up as Syston but it has got future developments in place, such as a leisure centre etc

Hope this has helped somewhat

was a student at leicster uni (no NOT De Montfort!!). there was a few halls at oadby. was a posh place. my halls were top of Queens Road ...straight up from Victoria Park...

i know student areas were evington (might be different name...it was a few yrs back!) and i know highfields is meant to be rough area.

a few houses along that road...welford road is it? i cnt rmbr...were nice.

I live in a village called Broughton Astley in leicestershire, and is a big village will everything you need. House prices are not that bad around that area.

I have lived in leicester all my life 36 years and has everything and is very central to a lot of other cities as well.

of course there are bad areas in the city but thats the same with every county you just need to know which one to aviod.

i live in Broughton Astley as well its all right isn't it.

Mind if i was to move i would have a look at Whetstone as they have a really good primary school and more shops and is a little closer to the city.
