Hi guys im just wanting a bit more information on paypal. I am trying to sell an item and somebody has offered to buy it and has offered to pay an extra £20 for the postage as they cant collect. for some reason i dont feel 100% certain about this so i was wondering if i was to send the item via royal mail recorded delivery and i waited till the money was in my paypal account would i be safe as i would have proof the item was received and the money has been in my account so paypal would ask for the proof which i could provide easily and they would give me my money is that correct or is there something i am missing?

I get such offers in response to Gumtree ads all the time. They are from people using hijacked Paypal accounts.
The money will disappear once the real owner of the account discovers the unauthorised transaction.

Don't use Paypal outside eBay, unless it is a negligent amount or you know the person well.

Avoid PayPal outside Ebay. Is usless in case of problems.

get him to pay as paypal gift then he cant have any come back
#7
Be wary of everything and don't think that paypal will help you...

Correct, if the payment is a gift it can't be reversed, otherwise forget it,
#9
but it can be chargedback even if you were paid via paypal gift. The bank may of been informed not to pay that certain payment, The bank may be cancelled that is linked to paypal, so even by gift you still have the worry that the payment may be charged back from you.
Best to wait about 3-4 working days before you post out from the moment you have the payment, this means it would of had time to clear from that persons bank account.
#10
avoid, let it run its course on ebay
#11
Run..... & keep running.....
#12
If it is Ebay and the buyer looks ok,tell them they can pay via bank transfer :D
#13
could they not pay by postal order? if they still do them

although i suppose that gives the buyer no protection, if selling via ebay dont you have to accept paypal?

bank transfer or western union unless you are satisfied the buyer is legit

It is to do with an item i posted on gumtree and thanks everyone for your responses i think i will accept but say that i want it as gift and the item will be sent 3-4 days after payment received. If i was to use bank transfer would there be anyway of them claiming the money back or once the money is in my account is that final?

Im sure with Bank transfers it would take alot of hassle for him to recall that payment. Bank transfers in my eyes are more final than paypal would be.
I have listed once on gumtree and everyone that messaged me seemed dodgy lol I gave up with the site.

so you ask on here if you think your gonna be scammed, most say yes, and you then say thanks think i am going to go with it, sometimes you just have to lol

if they claim fraud thenit can be recalled, but its still much safer than paypal
if you think they are dodgy just go western union, by far the safst way to recieve money, and 100% safe

Actually i went with the fact that from a number of posts i used the information provided ie the fact that PPgift is harder to recall with the fact that once it has left the account of the buyer even if they do try to recall the funds i will be given a fair chance to plead my case to paypal and re claim my money. If i have proof the buyer has received the item i am in just as good a position as if i had sold an item using cash on these forums. There is always a way somebody can lie to try to get money out of you but if you have covered the bases then you should be ok :)

Im interested probably due to my stupidity what exactly about my post makes you so sure (sure enough to insult my intelligence even though you have never met me and also do not know anything about me) that it is me being scammed the only thing i said was that i did not feel 100% sure about it. So based on my level of intellect being so low would my point of not being 100% sure not also be void meaning that your assumption that the deal is a scam is based on nothing. By the way i am sorry but i do not like being called stupid by people over the internet that seem to think because they are on the other side of a computer rather than standing next to me all manners get thrown out of the window. Also i would like to thank everyone who has answered my question without stupid remarks which in fact do not benefit anybody.

You should also think about the postage costs, will it cost £20 to post or is it a small item?

If it's a small item and the buyer is prepared to pay £20 for postage then it seems dodgy.
#25
No the item is rather big and tbh sending it via royal mail it is very possible it could come to that amount but i would use a courier service.

Good luck oO

You actually never answered why you were so sure it was a scam. I would like to point out people make paypal payments on this site all the time so are you saying everyone on this site using FS/FT is also trying to scam cause thats a big issue that needs to be seen to once again i asked the question because i wanted to understand what the ways around it are so i can for myself tell if the offer is in fact a scam. Oh and just to rain on your parade it was not a scam she decided to meet me instead as i was so uncertain had to pay half petrol but there you go.

It was a scam? damn she is pretty damn epic if she is going to get her cash back tho just this second i checked the notes on the light lmao that would have been kinda annoying but its all good. So what is your theory of how she will get the cash off me? if she ninja's thru my window in the middle of the night i have to say fair play to her she probably deserves it :)

Your paypal balance will be in minus as paypal will have had to pay the bank the chargeback amount. Paypal will expect you to pay the money back to balance the account.
#38
ok thanks, i thought paypal was the safest way to pay untill i read this, im waiting for the fund to clear in the bank so hopefully it will be ok, but wont be so trusting next time
#39
you say only use paypal through e bay is the only safest way and thats because paypal is owned by e-bay...but what if i brought something through say amazon or play.com.???? use another payment method?
