you get what you pay for.

how much do you value your computer, its contents and your online security as far ID protection goes?

Not always true. There are plenty of good "free" software around (including security software).

Most companies that give away free software (like Avast, AVG, ZoneAlarm etc) also SELL security software so they are hardly going to give away free "bad" security software as it would destroy their reputation.

Microsoft (with MSE) are also keen to ensure Windows becomes a safe secure operating system, so, again, they are hardly going to give away free bad software.

Where many people do fall down with free security software is that they think "anti virus" software is all they need, whereas most FULL internet security packages (like Norton, Kapersky etc) protect against far more than anti virus. Most of the free anti-virus products do not look for malware/spyware for example.

Microsoft Security Essentials DOES look for malware as well as viruses.

I read a lot on here about MSE, Avast and AVG. I changed from AVG to MSE following comments about how bad AVG is. My only complaint about MSE is that I can't use my computer while it updates (which it does without prior warning or asking me if I want to) - petty I know but I am an impatient so and so lol. Could anyone tell me if this is the same thing with Avast, and if I am losing anything from switching over to it. Thanks

I use Zone Alarm free firewall and Avast antivirus.

I also have Malwarebytes anti-malware that I run scans with at regular intervals to catch those nasty programs. I also use Firefox browser with 'NoScript' installed to block stuff on webpages unless I allow it.
