could this be the end of f1 as we know it

The FIA, Formula One's ruling body, has given Renault a two-year suspended ban for fixing last year's Singapore Grand Prix. Former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore has been banned from all F1 activities for life.

Renault's future in Formula One hung in the balance Monday as the French carmaker's race team faced the sport's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), on charges it fixed last year's Singapore Grand Prix.

Some fear that a stiff sanction could push the French manufacturer, which has been hit like the rest of the car industry by a sharp drop in sales due to the recession, into following Honda and BMW out of Fomula One.

Outgoing FIA boss Max Mosley last week raised the spectre of a total and permanent exclusion of the team, which is a central player in a sport whose reputation has suffered from repeated cheating scandals.

"Out. Total. Exclusion forever, gone, finished. That's the worst that could happen," he said when asked what the toughest sanction could be.

Entrenched corruption

Ari Vatanen, a former rally champion who is in a run-off with Mosley's preferred candidate Jean Todt in next month's FIA presidential election, told UK newspaper the Sunday Telegraph that corruption was so entrenched in Formula One a total break from the existing system may be the only way forward.

"What is happening here with Renault is more than just the tip of the iceberg, it is symptomatic of a wider problem," he told the newspaper.

"The image of the sport has been battered recently. Look at all the leaked dossiers. We have gone from 'Spygate' to 'Crashgate' with many other things in between. What the public see is a corrupt sport. They do not trust it and who can blame them."

In 2007 British team McLaren-Mercedes was fined 100 million euros for spying on Ferrari, a fine that would surely sink cash-strapped Renaults Formula One ambitions given that the company has suffered heavily from falling sales.

why would it be the end of F1 as we know it?? Renault can just go for all i care, they're rubbish anyway. Lots of new team next year, they;ve already extended it to 13 teams and looking for 14 so new BMW buyers can enter too. Best thing of all is return of Lotus so no, nowhere near the end of F1!

seams to me like they got away scot free, no fine? no points deductions, just a two year suspended ban! I have to say i expected them to have got more than that.

It is good for F1 that they have not been thrown out though...

suspended ban is ridiculous when you consider what they are guilty of-dont believe for one moment that the 2 people who left renault were the only people involved.

f1 is a joke anyway-saw stirling moss on telly last week and he said it wasnt even a sport anymore-hardly any overtaking, hardly any breathtaking excitement moments-its just a procession round the track -utterly boring imho-would rather watch paint dry.

It seriously looks like Renault didnt know anything about this and Briatore and Symonds came up with this all by themselves, It looks like rRenault have thrown there hands up after finding out the truth ,Rather than the end of formula 1 this looks more like a good day for Formula 1.

Why would this be the end of F1 as we know it? Maybe you should consider writing headlines for The Sun or Daily Mail?

Renault a two-year suspended ban for fixing last year's Singapore Grand Prix,by crashing into a wall therefore putting people in danger.

Doesn't really seem fair ...

What does a suspended ban mean? Is this like a suspended sentence?
#9
The daft thing about this is that Piquet was given immunity,Despite what anyone told him to do he was the one who crashed and put people lives at risk,

It means if they do anything bad in the next two years they will be kicked out of f1, after 2011 they are free of the ban if they do not do anything wrong.
