your right it does depend on where you live

February and March are the usual so-called free months. I always pay online rather than through Direct Debit because I like to be in control :)

my payment 'free' months are February & March but don't forget you probably pay by direct debit, therefore you give authority for the Council to take payment each month therefore your bank is expecting a payment to go out. In practice the council have to ask your bank for payment and obviously for these 2 months that will not happen, then in April it will kick in again.
Don't forget these are not really free months, because you have paid the years council tax in 10 months there is no more to pay!

Some Councils spread the payment over 12 months rather than 10

mine went out this Feb, when we moved in we our first payment was May so we end up have March & April off. I did phone and check and the woman at the council said it was a little strange but happens time to time. I checked back through my statements and Feb was was 10th payment since last May so shouldn't be paying the next two. I'd recommend going thorugh your previous statements

These are not "free" months. The whole year's amount is being paid over 10 months.
What I usually do is set up a Standing Order online. That way you state what the first and last payment dates are and there are no "accidental" payments (which can possibly happen with DDs).

LB of Lewisham calculates the year over 10 months. I'll get an invoice in March stating the new payments from April.

Yeah Feb & March for me too but I always ring up and defer Nov & Dec payments till Feb and March so I Have a bit of extra cash for xmas.;-)

What a nice Coucil you have. Mine sent me to court when I forget to pay then on time for the second time in the year.
I once asked to defer Dec payment and was told that my income covers life expenses and CT is one of them. Cheeky b*stards

Didnt think you could do this. Is it not then classed as late payment. With our council if you are late at all i think you have to pay the remainder of the years tax in full immediately.

if you are broke (like me) there is always an option to pay the full amount over twelve months if you ask them to do it. Then the amounts will be smaller every month. But generally this only happens if you request it.

thats why councils go to Iceland

but that sounds like the same to me. just pay more each of the 10 months rather than stretched 12 months. or am i not getting this? ;-)

mine's the same April's payment is due by the first of April, not the thirtieth. they don't get the payment cards out until about the twentieth so if you don't pay April's until the second of May they will send you a final notice of summons for the whole year's payment automatically because you're 2 months in arrears 2 weeks after you get the payment details

Wouldn't say I have a nice council but I've been doing this for at least 10 years and never been a problem. I just phone up in oct and make new arrangement, they then send me a new payment slip. Never been in arrears so maybe this helps. :-D

Mine are Feb & March but it depends on when you moved in - we moved in a year last August so got no free months last financial year - the council divided the bill by the number of months remaining in the financial year as we moved in part way through it. Best thing to do is hunt out your bill, or call them to clear things up
