I've just had a phone call from what sounded like an Indian Call centre, claiming the government had chosen my address for a refund of council tax for the last 5 years!

No doubt this is a scam, has anyone else received a phone call along similar lines?

course its a scam-the "government" wouldnt refund council tax-the local council would,if any such thing existed.I just hang up on any call centre,Indian or otherwise who cold call me-I am not even interested enough to listen to what their latest scam/pitch is.

It must be a scam, but not heard of this one before. Council Tax is local authorities, not central government.

As soon as he said the first line about the government refunding I hung up, was just wondering if anyone else had had a similar call is all.

I know it's local councils responsibility, should have said that in my original post...sorry!

Haha, you think you were picked at random and the government are going to give you a refund of tax just for the sake of it... (one way to wipe the governements black hole.. hmmmm)

Yes you were picked at random... to be scammed!

I'm guessing you were asked to pay an "admin" fee upfront of some sort for them to be able to release the funds?

I would have played him along, recorded it, and posted it on youtube! X)

or inform him of your dying relative who has £30 million in the bank. You need his bank details to process the money and he can keep a million for the effort!

January issue of our local home watch letter had a warning about this, via phone and email. Said just ignore both, they would only ever really contact you by post (which doesnt mean that a letter is definitely genuine!)

Just received a call from this lot, they asked me if I wanted my rebate paid directly into my bank or a cheque. I told them to send me all the details in the post and hung up.

I just had this phone call. Same scam. I said the person they wanted was in the garden and asked them to hold. As I type this they are still holding ... Their phone bill should be quite big by the time they twig :)
