A couple have had to pay a £114 fine after getting off a train two stops early.

Emma Clark and Davyd Winter-Bates were travelling to Southampton from London with South West Trains when they decided to get off two stops early at Eastleigh.

When they handed over their tickets at the station, they were told they were each being fined £57 because they had not stayed on the train until their destination.

The fine was twice the standard fare of £28.50.

Miss Clark told The Sun: “It is utter madness. I could understand being fined if I had stayed on the train two stops beyond my destination.”

A spokesperson for Stagecoach, which owns South West Trains, said the couple had been fined because they were using discounted tickets, costing £6, which do not allow passengers to break their journeys.

In a statement, they said: “Leaving a train early is not allowed on heavily discounted tickets. The fine is double the standard single fare.”

In their position I would have said fine I will get stay in the station and get on the next train for the final 2 stops. No way would I pay the fine.

Which totally justifies what they done in my eyes

Well it depends on morals and ethics.

Yes they got off at a different station than they should of but like they say its not as if they got off later.

It should go by the fact that if that stop was more expensive then get charged the difference.

I have been to stations before like Scarborough from Warrington and decided to stay in York overnight instead, I saw that as ok since I had purchased a ticket for another station further on the same route so its not as if I changed trains.

Also if I just went to York instead of Scarborough originally then I would of saved a quid or two anyway so my ticket to Scarborough was more expensive anyway!

It would be far better to moan at ticket pricing that gives cheaper tickets for travelling further.

Putting that stupidity aside, they were clearly travelling fraudulently without valid tickets and deserved to be fined after being caught. Its quite obvious they bought the ticket knowing it was a real bargain... maybe next time they will not try to bypass the pricing structure in place.

bunch of crims hang em high

Seems ridiculous.
perhaps they should also have bought tickets for the journey from the stop before Eastleigh to Eastleigh and presented them on arrival. Is that possible?

Of course they could have done that, but it would have been even more deliberate fraud. I'd expect an arrest if they were caught doing that.

kinda hard lines tbh ;-) lol

in all seriousness - getting off two stops early and being fined is a joke. If you stayed on beyond station your ticket stated, then fine them.

a quick online check shows its £4.20 cheaper to travel to Eastleigh, than to Southampton?

What we are missing here is possibly the fact that they were given a special rate for a longer journey and therefore by getting off two stops early they avoided a higher fare. Stagecoach should have elaborated OR The Sun should have printed the full story.

£6 from Southampton to London?

Bad deal? You mad?

So London to Eastleigh was £1:80 then.

No.. Southampton to Easteigh was £57. Eastleigh to London was a freebie.

I thought they were travelling to Southampton from London on a £6.00 ticket. ( I'm assuming each )
It says that in the op.
So if Disco says it's £4.20 cheaper to travel to Eastleigh than to Southampton, then it must be only £1.80 from London to Eastleigh.

Haha...... yeh, I picked it up as the other way round!

Thing is though, pricing on trains is completely messed up.... and done so for the reason it is confusing. If you know what your doing, the deals are there. If you try to play clever, it comes back and bites yer bum!

So, if say you buy these "prison cell sentence" tickets that define exactly which stop you can get off at and you become ill during your journey and decide to get off a couple of stops early you would be fined for it!

lol, complete morons the train companies, getting off 2 stops early...........let alone the fact that half the time they run their trains without working toilets, when in fact they are not to even leave a station in that case. Paid £90 for the high speed train 2 weeks ago and no working toilets with a 28 week pregnant wife had to get off and back on at Ebbs Fleets.

they are scum IMO

I have many more examples from this year alone

of course I did, but it happens way too much, last winter the 'new' high speed trains didn't have toilets again because the facility to take the waste away at the stations was frozen...........nice new trains, complete sheet......

LOL..... To be honest, I've not been on them (not travelled on Eurostar either since they moved to St Pancras. Surprised to hear that though. Did they reply?

I remember the good old days of falling asleep on the train ending up 50miles from my intended destination. The conductor saying okay lad just try to stay awake this time. I'm getting sick of this nazi state!
