Creative Zen converting video files?

I've bought a Creative Zen player to play films/episodes etc that I've downloaded in avi format. The problem I've got is that I cannot seem to get the films etc to convert so that they can be played. The creative software says file not recognised or when it does convert it it says file not recognised!

I'm currently using these two conversion programs...

Apex Video Converter Super 6.12
Fox Video Studio

Player = http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/zen/

Conversion standard = http://ask.americas.creative.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=ww_english_add,U={B8F60310-DA4F-11D3-94F4-00500463020E},Company={CEAE216D-8719-4C00-AC9F-03BC258F7B70},d=1130251443648,VARSET=ws: http://us.creative.com,case=11043

does it not play AVI's out of the box like the Zen Vision M does?

I have 30GB vision M and I just drag an drop and they play fine.

EDIT - The website says it plays Divx/Xvid so why are you trying to convert them?

When I download films and try to drag over to the player it says its not supported and need converting. But it then says it cannot do it:x

The only way I can do it so far is to convert the avi to mp4 then convert the mp4 to wmv using the creative software.

Get WinAVI that should convert avi straight to wmv though I am just as confused as Simon_G as to why it won't play avi natively.

Just tried again to add a film - Heat - which is a avi and this is what creative import wizard says

1 video file exceed the playback capability of the player. Click convert to use video converter to convert and transfer files.

When I tried to convert it says unregonised, so I have to convert to something else - mp4 - then use the coverter to get a wmv file which plays like cr ap:x

I'll try out winavi :)

Found this on the creative forum website.

If you have the vision w and those video you have does not need any conversion, you shouldn't need to convert them either on the new ZEN.

I got my Zen today and the answer quoted above is wrong. Videos that worked fine on the Vision W even though their resolutions exceeded the Vision W's native resolution do not work on the Zen. They have to be transcoded so the resolution is below 320x240 before loading them on the device. This is a major design failure and I'm sorry I wasted my time waiting for this junk. It's going back to Amazon.
