My OH has always wanted to go to Crete and I want to surprise him but I have never been anywhere in the Greek Isles and was hoping to get some pointers from all you kind folk :-)

I would like to go September (ish) is it starting to turn colder?
Not too sure if I should go AI or self catering.
Not too far from beach
Dont want it to be hectic nightlife on the doorstep but close enough if we feel up to it.

Any hotel or property recommendation would be gratefully apprieciated.

Thanks

hi ive been to crete, i can never remember the name of my apartments but the ones right next to us were called maria kelly i think, and they are 2mins from the beach, we went with friends and they stayed further up than us and the beach wasnt as nice at there end. we went to gouves which was really nice. quiet where we were but a nice walk into the night life etc

any country that makes you put toilet paper in a bin instead of the toilet is off my travel list, I am told that more modern buildings are okay so make sure that you are not getting old accomodation. I went once and swore I would not return until it was sorted :-) ... still warm in Sept though

Places in Crete to avoid: Hersonissos, Malia, Stalis
Places in Crete that are nice: Elounda, Agios Nikolaos

you have the choice of the east end of the island (hersonnisos, malia, agios nikolaos, elounda), west (chania and rethymnon - chania is gorgeous) and also the south (frangocastello and sfakia - difficult to get to but very unspoiled)

been to crete loads - absolutely love the place. wish i was going again.

Went to Crete in 2007, we stayed in Stalis which was about 10 minutes cab ride to Malia, the strip near Stalis was more family intended when we went, the beach which was a 5 minute walk was full of families, where as Malia is the club hot spot. Stalis has probs changed since then. We spent all our nights in Malia, went to Heraklion during the day which was decent.

Agios Nikolaos was beautiful, highly recommended, just the right amount of everything in one place. We stayed in Hermes Hotel with Thomson, on the seafront which was wonderful, with a beautiful view. Woudl definitely go back.

Malia is indeed the main area of nightlife so don't stay there if you want any decent sleep. Are you hiring a car ? If so Knossos is worth a visit but get there early before the crowds & a little know place that i really enjoyed was the Homo Sapiens Museum at Lasithi.

** Surprisingly very little info on google of this place but have found this :

Also be careful if you go to Chania - shop owners will entice you in with "free" drinks then try to sell you overpriced stuff from your shop. A pretty place but horrible people.

Spot on!

Malia is the ayai napa of crete - its a complete dump!

Chania is over-rated imho but we quite liked Kato Stalos.

September can be very hot but expect a couple of cloudy days out of 1 week.

if you go to elounda get yourself a trip over to the island of spinalonga, former leper colony and subject of a recent novel "the island" (i think that was the title).

if you do decide to go there, search out viktor zorbas in elounda. just ask around for him, everyone knows him. he has an absolute stack of info about spinalonga and will help you with tours. you may have to buy his book for a few euros but me and my girlfriend spent a very informative hour or 90 mins with him - well worth it as he was able to expand massively on the history and chequered past of the place.

I went a couple of years ago and stayed in Malia - it's not as bad as some here seem to be making out. I can't remember the name of the apartments we stayed in, but they were about a 10min walk from the centre of the town and it was pretty quiet.

That said, we went in September so the season was winding down and it wasn't too busy.

OP, when we went the weather was usually about the high 20's to low 30's, so still pretty hot...

Went a couple of years ago, was ok as a flop and drop holiday, i.e pick up a stack of books and have two weeks doing not an awful lot.
I wouldnt go back again, too many other places in the world I want to visit.
