Depending on the severity of the conviction, it's probably spent by now....

if it was not a serious thing(and Im guessing it wasnt,if you arent even sure if you were charged or not) then it will be expired.

Well can you not remember if you went to court. Its convictions at court that go as a criminal record. You could be arrested ten times then be released no further action and not have a criminal record. You canwrite in and request it from your local police force.

How old were you at the time???

nothing to worry about-If you have never been in court then you will be fine for america-after ten years you wont show on any computer check.

You can only do a search on yourself under Scottish law. But you can use their website to do it from outside Scotland. From memory it costs about £25. See more here:

http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/

Also, records are all based upon the severity of the punishment and not the the offence (I think). Cautions with no other punishment expire after 5 years I seem to remember.

Hope that helps a little.

you mean convicted, you need to be charged to end up in court

Having spent £60 for the application, £10 for CRB check, £7 for special USA acceptable photographs, £50 rail fare because we had to be in London before 10am.Then spent six hours at the embassey queuing for a visa.

They suggested that the criminal record was not a problem but the fact that my parents were dead and that I didn't have a job at the time meant that I was a 'flight risk' so my application was turned down.

I sincerely wish that I had just boarded a plane without a visa and taken my chances at the airport; but then the anxiety would have killed me on the way.

Only telephone enquiry number was cgarged at £1.50 per minute and the info they could give was not relevant.

I will not put myself through that aggro again; there are plenty of other countries that I am allowed into.

Being charged and being convicted are most defnitely not the same thing. You can be charged with an offence but its only when or if you go to court on that same charge you can be convicted of it. You can be charged but then later the charges dropped. Conviction in court will always be on your record, spent or otherwise. When its spent it just means you no longer have to declare it - but it will always be on your record. Prison sentences of more than 2 and a half years are never spent.

Alternately try this, it's the visa waiver pre-uthorisation service...

lmao - reminds me of an Ian Botham story, when they asked him at Sydney Airport if he had a criminal record, he replied "Didn't know I still needed one"

Was arrested when I was 11, went to court when I was 12 I'm now 27 it's still on my record so I can tell you now it does not expire though they should have deleted it 2 yrs after but I have to send a letter to my local force to have it removed by order of the magistrates. I know this because I went and spoke to a magistrate about it and she agreed it should have been removed.

It costs £10 and you need to send your passport to get them to check.
#35
I'm in the middle fo going through this process and also from Dundee, and it's for a trip to Florida coincidently. even if it's just an arrest it will show on their systems and the process takes forever. 2 weeks to get the criminal record check, then upto 6 weeks for an appointment at the embassy, then a few days after that you should get your passport back.

Nothing you can do now mate, you're never going to get it by June, so you're just going to have to risk it for a biscuit!!
#36
You will have to call the wedding off!!!!
#37
things like this totally amaze me! i mean this is not something you forget! i know if i had been arrested and i went to court i think i would remember what it was for and whether or not the charge was dropped or what the outcome actually was i mean it was only ten years ago so not that long ago and your only in your late twenties so not exactly memory loss either! does the bride know the situation? as i honestly think it is too late to sort now to be able to go unfortunately.
