Me too. I've always been worried about my boys getting it so have kept them off dairy all their lives. Apparently you need to have the genes plus a trigger to set it off & the mad professor Herman Taylor at St Georges in Tooting believes that the bacteria found in milk is a trigger.

Sorry cant be of any help but Smiley's people at NACC are usually very good. Diet can help when things get bad - cut down on roughage ie broccoli stalks(always a problem for me) & I found that following the American BRAT diet helped during flare ups. That is Bananas, Rice, Apple sauce & Toast. Plus keeps fats low.
You might note that I talk of Crohns in the past tense as I havent had a flare up in 10 years - since I changed to UHT dairy only ( or cooked as in cheese on pizza) - so maybe old Herman has a point or I've just been lucky.
Good luck to you & your son.

I agree, it's bit like saying I don't want my kid getting knocked down so I keep him in the house all the time. If there's no other reason for your kids developing it apart from your paranoia then you're lining them up to develop other issues later in life .
Dairy products:
Excellent nutrition – fats, carbs, proteins, vitamins and minerals – riboflavin, vitamin B12, magnesium, potassium, and when fortified, Vitamins A and D
Calcium-rich – strengthens bones, reduces osteoporosis, may help with weight loss or reduce body fat; calcium plays a critical part in blood clotting, muscle contraction, heartbeat maintenance and proper nerve function
Low in sugar

They do have dairy products - UHT dairy products - as they dont have the bacteria in them or else cooked dairy as in biscuuits & cakes. Cheap ice creams are fine as they are made with milk powder which is made using high heat rather than with fresh cream. I have had crohns for nearly 30 years now & since I stopped having fresh dairy I have been healthy.
Unless you have crohns you shouldnt s lag off people that have & have found a way of helping themselves.

It might not be food related at the moment but it can become food related. When I was first diagnosed food didn't have any effect on pain levels but I can now get pains after I eat certain things.

Also if he is on a liquid diet and and if he loses weight don't let the doctors give him milk based weight gain suppliment. I was given that when I came out of hospital before before I knew dairy affected my crohns and I ended up having to go back into hospital

Exactly. My youngest son was very ill as a baby & wouldnt eat anything. He was put on a liquid diet but he just got worse & worse. It was only when he was admitted to GOSH that they went ballistic that he was on milk based supplements & he was highly allergic to milk. It took a lot of effort however to find a supplement with a high enough calorie level that wasnt dairy based. And then they said that if you are ill, the body cant cope with large protein molecules & the dairy alternative of soya is a large protein molecule - nightmare. Eventually after 4 years he is no longer allergic & GOSH are fantastic at allergy/gastro problems - cant thank them enough - just wish they could educate other paediatricians in their methods.
