You have to pay the following:

Add together the cost of the item and the P&P

To that total you have to add Duty. The amount of duty depends on the type of item. (Click here for the duty rate of common goods)

To this total you then have to add VAT (17.5%)

There will also be an additional handling charge of between £8 - £16 depending on who delivers the item in this country.

(This is assuming you are buying from outside the EU)

In addition to above - if the item is sent through as cargo you will be liable to airline handling charges based on weight(or size equivalent) and an agents customs clearance fee (and these can and will be a lot higher than the £8-16) - A lot of people buy things abroad and are told by the seller it includes the handling but when it gets to the UK you find out it only includes the handling on their side:x

I believe there are certain items that are exempt.

Have a look at this link and then check the links off that page.

Hi there,my mate just bought a crash helmet from America for $500 and has just got a tax bill for £60.He has appealed it saying it meets EEC standard something or other, but was told it will cost him an extra £30 if the appeal fails.Hope this gives you some idea.
