I recently signed to the viber app to communicate with someone. However, I have noticed that it is a daft app as it allows you to be a contact to everyone who has your mobile number, unlike skype where they need your permission to become your contact and are able to speak to you and vice versa.

Anyway, I got an unwanted call on viber yesterday from someone who had my mobile number. I didn't want to speak to them so I did not answer the call.

They then sent me a message and so I read it and lo and behold, the stupid app let them know that I had done this, so they called me again.

It was embarrassing this time to pretend I am not available as I was just reading the message that they had sent me.

They have now sent me two more messages which I dare not read as that would indicate to them that I am around and just ignoring them.

What a stupid idea for an app to let the sender know that their message had been read and to allow people to contact you without your permission.

whats app is better m8!

my favourite is skype but not everyone is on skype and i have noticed that since i have joined viber, a lot of my contacts are on viber. but it is not a good app for privacy.

i need to speak to the person that i had set up viber to speak to and so i can't simply remove the app from my phone as that person only uses viber.

She must have another app?

Tell her to download kik messenger where you don't have to give your phone number.

Send that person a message (via Viber) & ask them to call you or (radical; I know) ring them via Viber.

Also, just tell the nuisance that you do not wish to speak with them.

How difficult is that?

I tried it once. It got as far as asking for my phone number and I removed it again. Phone contacts and internet contacts should never merge. It's a horrific idea.

I suppose you could tell everybody that the viber app for some unknown reason often causes your phone to lock up if you answer a call on it so you have to remove the battery to get it to reboot, as an excuse to not answer their calls :)

For most people, that's easy. But we are dealing with mutters here. It's probably someone he gave some dodgy share tips to and they're after him for compensation. (_;)

Try 'LINE'.

Spam problems with Viber, reported - ignored.
Got rid and went back to the annoying whatsapp; friends recommended KakaoTalk - fine.

I agree. Its freaky to think someone could call me on the net when i didnt even give my number to them but they got it from someone else then i appear on viber as contact as they are also on viber. A really stupid idea for an app. Not to mention, you could actually appear on camera if you answer the call!

I am starting to get really freaked out at the moment about all this digital stuff. I just found out that my ipad keeps a log of every where i have visited! WTF!

I'm guessing you don't use the HUKD Whatsapp thing? That sounds like your/my worst nightmare X)

There was an article about that back when ipad were very new. I can't recall the numbers properly, but it was something like an iphone would report your current location 100,000+ times a day? Even if that wasn't creepy, seems like a massive waste of resources. Not sure if that's still the case.

I just say no. If you want me I'll be on (insert communication method here). 99% of the time they have it pre-installed, they just can't be bothered to use it.

Well, there's plenty of situations where its possible to read a message but maybe not convenient to return the call (Internal meeting at work; in a loud public area; or passenger in a car for example).

I personally think the way we communicate is changing, its not quite there yet, but its almost considered rude to call someone nowadays without setting it up first.

i was clearing my activity from google account and noticed that it records every where on the map that I have been to over god know how long. it was like big brother has been following me. i cleared it all and think i switched the tracking off. but as it is google, it records your geographical movement on any device that you have and store it in your account, all the places you have ever visited.

i am sure most people are not aware of this. if anyone got hold of that data, that could be very sensitive.

It doesnt just record your movements, between my android device and my old moto 360 watch, i found it recording LOADS of conversations, in one instance a work conversation where no trigger words were mentioned and in one instance recording a work matter that if known my watch was recording inadvertently or otherwise would have seen me get into some trouble.

More often than not it was just random google questions or mishearing a conversation it was a phrase or word as a trigger but yeah, scary stuff. go to history.google.com and select the audio activity section ...

It does ask you if you want to use location services when you device is new/has newly installed software on it. But I doubt many people pay attention to just what that means. Not sure that is the only way the data is recorded though.

Google fit makes it more obvious, shows you a map of where you've walked everyday.

I don't but it's interesting how google have largely escaped the criticisms Samsung faced.

I was astonished when realised they were capturing conversation snippets. Along with tracking your routes and the timings on those routes and destinations its scary to think what someone with nefarious intentions could learn about you ..

It's true, they have escaped to a point. They are still criticized heavily, if you look in the right places. I suspect they appear to face less criticism because they are so large they are almost unavoidable. Without avoiding the internet completely. Doesn't make it right though.

Alexa is the next one.

PS. Don't raise concerns about WhatsApp in the "official" HotUKDeals thread, as that eventually leads to a suspension.

Also, every visit to pages here at this site (as well as many, many more) are being recorded using Google Analytics (& have been for years).

As msk said above, you need to separate your real life from your online life if you not wish to be tracked.

Also, of course, disable all location services on any device you use, & do not record any personal details in online account profiles (or disclose it purposely within Forum comments).

Try Google Allo / Google Duo. Was sceptical until lately when I started using them. Now most of my Whatsapp contacts have migrated to them.

Seriously, I am starting to feel I am being recorded on my device cameras. I read a link someone gave me, that your camera can record you without you knowing. And listening to conversations you are having with other people. You are never safe from intrusion anymore.
Famous people must have to send in the privacy police before they enter a room or pick up a device.

Surely you're wealthy enough to employ your own personal privacy police if you fear you are being bugged? Although it might be more economic to turn off the internet connections at home and on your mobile devices.

I dont remember being asked this. If it did, i may have thought it meant using my location to recommend nearest shops etc, not to log my whereabouts. It definately never warned that this is what it was going to do.

all our devices are on my google account so when i saw the geographical log, i also saw my OH's geographical movements, which i don't actually want to know, and vice versa. It does mean that if a jealous spouse wanted to track their partners whereabouts, it would be very easy to do! oO

They couldn't (wouldn't?) be able to do anything of those thing without logging your location. What do you think 'use location' means? I'm guessing you've never read the terms or service.

They've actually done you a solid by making you a nice interface where you can see exactly what is happening on a map. Many things hoover up this information and don't show you anything.

Isn't it funny how it's freakier when you can see it?

That is just it. It may not just be me that can see it! It wouldnt take that long for someone to hack into your account to see the locations, site visits, everything you have done on the net, even to switch the tracker on to track you. It really is too freaky to think that your life is logged in detail and easily accessible.

But there was nothing hidden about a hungry labrador running at speed towards your picnic basket. You could see him coming alright. This tracking is hidden and unadvertised.
