"Deal or no Deal" - I don't get it.

So from what I gather Deal or no Deal is one of the most popular 'quizzes' on TV right now. I hadn't seen it at all up until a few days ago when it happened to be showing at someone's house.

Is there no skill involved in this game what-so-ever? Is it really just a fool picking random boxes and hoping for low numbers to come up? Is any kind of thought involved at all?

What confused me more is how everyone on the show was acting towards each other. I assumed that everyone was friends/family but apparently they've only just met each other on the show! "Oh Tyrone, you're such a wonderful guy, you've touched the world in ways charities and aid organisations can only hope to achieve *opens box*... £50,000! - Oh Tyrone, I'm so sorry, after all we've been through together :( Let's hug and cry a lil."

For someone just switching on for the first time there's only one 3 letter acronym that can sum up this HOURS (!) worth of viewing - WTF?!

Where's the appeal?!?!

same boat ur in mate....hubby was watching it once and i was like WHATS GOING ON? looks stupid
#2
Aye its utter rubbish, they could atleast condense the show to an advert break and just have someone pick a box out of 15 and thats what they win........easy.
#3
nope, no skill whatsoever, it's down to complete luck. Such an easy premise wish I'd thought of it, lol

It would be good fun to go on it though, as the contestants get put up in a hotel together (free food/alcohol etc) until they get picked for their game, which is how they all know each other.
#4
I've tried to get in to it a few times and just got confused... it seems completely random

the only skill I can see is in working out if whats in the box they end up with is likely to be worth more than 'the banker' is offering.
#5
the people appear really friendly because you stay on the show until you get picked at the start so you could be with people for weeks before any of you get picked. Once you are picked somebody takes your place on the show.

I'd say the strategy is in trying to second guess the "banker" and dealing at the right time.
#6
It's completely skill based - pick LUCKY numbers! :) I love it when they start talking about strategies and plans as if that will affect the outcome - If I ever got on that programme I'd work my way through the numbers in order - 1,2, think I'll take 3 now Noel, 4, 5, DEAL :)

Exactly I have recently gotten into the show, its not so much the game iitself which is luck (apart from the strategy you mention of dealing at the right time) but more about getting into the characters of the people and the will to see them win.

If you watch it on a daily basis you get to know the quirks of each character. and as you see them get picked get to know that little bit more about them, the show is built more out of tension than a game plan.

Contestants once picked for the show stay in a hotel in Bristol, although the show is on 6 days a week on tv, they apparantly film 3 show daily, 22 contestants picked at random, apparantly you get to spend up to two weeks then with the other contestants, so that is the link to why people get to know one another well and there always seems to be a sense of comradary....and really thats the games main charm, nothing else.

correct! im sure all those saying "is a stupid game blah blah blah" wouldn't mind being part of show thou.

theres 22 boxes (people), and shows are filmed 4 at a time (max 4 hours). the longest you would know the other people for is 5-6 days, so, say a week max.

That week could change your life, in that you stand to win a quarter of a mill. Fair enough, you might end up walking away with 1p but its more than you came with (as gutted as you were turning down offers of substanial amounts previously)

In all honesty, I try to watch the last 20mins or so when im in - and find, that people are just too greedy. For those that know how the show works ... a lad was offered £30k irrc not so long back, with £50, £750, £3k, £10k, £250k still left to pick. NO DEAL was the reply, the very next box he took away the £250k, and after the round, he was offered a final deal of summit like £300 (cant remember exact figures)

Why cant people be happy with what they have! I know its a once in a lifetime chance of opening a box containing £250 grand, but its also a once a lifetime chance you could blow it to! theres SOOOO much you (and I) could do with £30k!

Just as lucky a using "your lucky method".. i love it when Noel says "We dont want to see the big one. If we dont see the big one your in for a "MASSIVE offer from the banker of at least £25k"... Open the box, and what is it £250k - lol. Im sure Noel's being feed info through his earpiece when they choose a box

lol @ fool - dunno why, but that made me laugh! And yes... it is pretty much that simple. To be fair, it's a genius idea... it's the gameshow equivalent of bingo in regards to skill, but it gives the illusion that the contestants are in control of their own destiny... when in fact, they're just as able to pick boxes 1 to 15 in sequence and do just as well as they would otherwise do! Brilliant format, if you consider it... personally, I much prefer gameshows with a bit of intelligence (whatever happened to the Krypton Factor?!), but you can't deny the genius of this show!

That's what I always say too, I'll just start at 1 and see how I get on... I'm surprised no one has done that yet (or have they?) Maybe they're told they are not allowed to.
#12
Yes i agree WTF is this all about it makes me laugh when people think they can predict random events:?
#13
I love it when a contestent says "I know that the £250,000 is in my box" or "My great grandma is here with me telling me where the big money is", then it all goes down the tubes from there. The greedy ones are the best. Offered huge sum of money, but go away with pennies.

The game has absolutely nothing to do with skill, luck or chance, it all comes down to choices they make on the spot.
#14
Yes - it's the acting like they have a strategy to which box should be picked that made me laugh. There was some dopey looking chick on it when I saw it and they were constantly talking about the number 14 or something, how 'it'd been good to her', really going into depth about this number. I couldn't believe how seriously it was being taken!

I have to admit the 'banker' did make me lol a little, when Noel said something to the effect of "banker says you're **** outta luck, bitch!"

My great grandma is here with me telling me where the big money is

^LOL, I think we must have seen the same episode, unless they're ALL like this?! This contestant was so greedy it was unreal, I was longing for her to fail.

spot on, exactly what I've just said. Dont know when they're onto a good thing! its like oh £30k is all ive been offered, that would do, i want the big one! ... tuff, you've got a penny in ya box, fool! lol

P.S. Bring back The Crystal Maze.

Am I the only one who loves it when they go away with peanuts after saying no deal to a big offer :)

Nope, I've never got it either.

I've always said that it would work better as a 3 minute show. A bit like this:

Noel: OK over-keen contestant, please pick a box

Contestant: Box 7 please Noel.

Noel: Congratulations, you have won £18. Now leave my sight you despicable tramp.

Show ends

12-Dec-06 Donna £250,000.00 £170,000.00 £21,000.00

lol! If you get offered £170k then take it! Rather than eventually getting £21k!

07-Jan-07 Laura £250,000.00 £45,000.00 £250,000.00

Now that's balls for you! Offered £45k but stuck it out and was lucky enough to have £250k in her box!

The thing that gets me is how these people manage to get the time off their work for that length of time!

About a year ago (my Gran was staying with us!) I watched it nearly every day and there was a girl who never got picked for weeks she ended you winning something like £50!

She also probably lost her job in the process!

Probably only off work for a week or two max in "real time". They record loads of shows each day, not just one.

I knew you were going to say that.

I think the appeal is to batty women who think they're "a little bit" psychic, who think they might become incredibly wealthy through the show. Alternatively, it's to men who think that their superior powers of logic mean that, despite the game being basically random, they can beat the system. For all, it's a chance to sit and watch the TV going "Ooh! That one! That one!" and then sigh "Oh, I said they should've gone for that one" when whoever's playing it uses their own psychic / logical madskillz poorly and screws up.

I've only ever seen it once though, so I could be wrong.
