Dear DVLA,

As part of the crazy price you charge me for "road" tax, please include in this price the following item:

1 x Renewal reminder for a MOT.

Year on year I forget to get an MOT done before the due date and am left without my glorious car for a few days whilst an MOT is in progress.

I solely blame yourself for my fish memory and take no resposibility!

SORT IT OUT

Kind Regards,

JNY

we send renewals out to all our customers who have had thier MOT's done buy us :p

peel the reminder sticker you get on your mot certificate off & stick it on the door pillar or bottom of the screen (lefthand side) or put a reminder in your phone, to be honest i cant understand how people forget  we must have a dozen or so a week esp at the end of the month panicking to try & get an mot done because they have forgotten !!

All the garages I've took my car too have never done that. They are all independant though so maybe haven't considered mailing systems yet (don't know why thought lol).

The DVLA are quick to remind you about your tax disc though as they are after your money. But with MOTs, regarding SAFETY, you get nothing haha. Shows their priorities lie with making £££.

we are independent, its just another service we offer for free & it gets back repeat buisness

does seem strange, but i guess the powers to be deem it too expensive to implement it for some reason, it took them long enough & much money to get the whole of the MOT scheme computerised !

Why are you attacking the DVLA? VOSA does MOTs. VOSA also get money from the MOTs.

Since it would be an immediate fine for no tax, many would complain if we weren't reminded. Not having a MOT is not an automatic fine.

Apologies, my rant is towards VOSA another Government run company.

From wiki: VOSA and DVLA are both Government agencies so my point is still valid IMHO.

If they want to improve services then surely this would be the best way! Saves people also paying inflated garagae bills as the 'pirates' amungst the car industry decend on people in a panic.

We buy test slots from VOSA and each test slot cost i think £1.75 That's the only part of the fee that goes to the government. The rest of the fee the garage keeps, which goes towards staffing, equipment etc etc & packets of hobknobs for tea-break :p

£1.75??? I wouldn't mind if they charged me an extra 50p for a reminder lol

Staffing and equiptment are understandable but hobknobs??? :w00t: jk!

Bit off the topic now but I wish there was a brilliant website where you could rate your local garage online. Bit like tripadvisor. It would need to be done properly though to prevent self promotion lol

Done a quick search of garages in my area....

Apparently theres 10 garages within 5 miles with a feedback range of 96-99%. :w00t:.....are our garages that good ?

A couple of the garages I clicked also had comments which reeked of self promotion by the garages! i.e. duplicate feedback comments!

No MOT is an automatic fine (regardless of how roadworthy the car is) unless the car is under three years old or on its way to a prebooked MOT. As with no tax, the penalty is non-endorsable.

My mot is tomorrow mornig.
It run out on the 30/12/2009.
if you go for an mot 1 month well 29 days before they will give you 13 month mot.
so will get my mot tomorrow the 02/12/2009 and it will run out the 30/12/2010.
Save messing around at xmass time might help people that dont know this is poss.

why not just make use of google calendar and put reminders etc in there. It does amaze me that some people say they are always forgetting things yet they are sitting in front of the best organiser ever invented - A PC!

quicker than typing this rant :)

I also thought you can get done for no insurance too as no MOT = Invalidated insurance.

Only If you're caught whilst using the car, which is different to the RFL which uses the database and requires either SORN or paid for. If your car is on the drive and not MOTd, you have no problem, if your car is on the drive and not SORNd or taxed, you have a problem.

Not as simple as that, your insurer would not be able to invalidate your insurance just because you have no MOT. A lack of MOT does not mean your car is not road worthy, just not road legal.

I take your point but I'd imagine the insurer would quite easily be able to find something unroadworthy in a car in the even of an accident claim involving a car with no MOT

It would have to be shown that the accident or damage was as a result of the condition of the car, the same whether you had a MOT the day before, were 12 months and 30 days into a MOT or your MOT had expired. A MOT does not alleviate the responsibility of having a roadworthy car if it is being driven on the road. Granted your life will be more difficult and you may have your insurance cancelled however.
