debranding mobile phones?

I had my nokia 5800 unlocked (originally on vodafone) and have been unable to send text messages using my orange sim, I realised it was a problem with the message centre number but the phone wouldn't let me change it.
Apparently now it needs debranding in order for me to be able to change the message centre number. Is this something I can do myself? I've seen sites giving tips on how to do it, but they all seem to vary, a link to any reputable sites would be good!
Thanks in advance, will rep for help!
