Decent PS3 Video Converter (FREE)

Hi Can anyone recomend a very good video converter for the PS3?

I've tried PS3 Video 9 but the quality is shocking also it doesn't playback some files when I've converted them.

I need to convert some avi files (as my ps3 is very picky at playing them alone) also got a few MKV files that I need to transfer.

I'm looking for something that is freeware or opensource.

I would ask in the PS3 forums but cba registering.

Cheers

I found a really good program that converts mkv to mp4. I'll find the name and url now give me a sec.

Try mkv2vob, chuck it in google, it works great even with hd 1080p movies

http://www.mkv2vob.com/ Always tick transcode audio in the settings, but this software always seems to work for me for hd MKV content.

Found it.

It's called XemonMKV. I downloaded it last night and on my dual core celron e1200 machine with 3gb of ram takes 10-15minutes to convert a 1-2gb mkv file.

I've watched two videos using the above software, one was a 1gb episode and the other a 1.6gb film. Both watched on the 360 using tversity. The film had purple squares at times and paused a fair amount of times but this is probably due to tversity.

On my 360 I tried out tversity which is really good but you cannot rewind or fast forward which is annoying as I knocked the controller half way through a film and couldn't watch the end!

I haven't got a ps3 but i'm assuming it can play mp4 files.

Another vote for mkv2vob.

Are you having problems with the audio in the avi playback?

Have you tried streaming direct with PS3 Media Server? Haven't come across any avi or mkv's it can't handle yet.

streamings not an option i'm afraid, it's for a friend and he doesn't even have the internet.

The problem I'm having with avi's (Divx) is they will not play at all, some work, yet others don't and I cant understand why this is.

so I know the PS3 will play MP4 back no probs so was kinda looking to convert to that too.

These MKV programs are bril btw :)

use xvid4psp to convert problematic divx to mp4, even to AVI again (so that the PS3 plays it!)
