im due to have my baby in August and want to give the house a cheap but nice makeover, in the frontroom we have laminate and want to put carpet down, do you think its better to pull up the laminate or just carpet over it? also as were on a tight budget would it be better to get a cheapish carpet and underlay or go for a dearer carpet where you dont need underlay? in terms of which would last longer and feel better and in the kitchen im thinking of painting/glossing the cupboard doors, is it simple enough to just gloss straight ontop of them or would i need to sand them first or prime them etc. any advice will be a help, thanks

don't get a cheap carpet as you will regret it later ... how about a nice big rug to go over the laminate.

as for the kitchen you could change the door handles and re paint the cupboard fronts

I had carpet when mine were babies - never again!!!!

When I moved house - laminate all downstairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Potty training, food, sickness - it's all just wipeable and clean :)

weve got a big rug, but our frontroom always feels slightly cold so we thought if we got some carpet it would make it feel warmer and look better and i can always see dust and cat hairs on the laminate which annoys me and im fed up of sweeping and mopping up lol id rather give it a quick hoover everyday.

in terms of hygiene, i think laminate is better, i would definitely go with the rug idea.

as for painting, depends on whether you are painting onto a smooth shiny surface, you may need to sand it down. You may be able to get some spay paint but then it will cost more. Although if the surface is reasonable you should be able to just paint over with non-drip gloss.

ikea do some really cheap kitchen doors you might be able to replace the doors and handles for alot less than you think we got some for the garage and utility in a beach coulor they were from about £3 a door, saves trying to paint yours if you have a small kitchen could work out very cheap :) good luck with baby

Cheap carpets,I dunno £80 or so if average living room, don't last long.

Carpets in long run can get ruined, babies sick, toddlers sick, potty training and so on.

Wouldn't have carpets again, other than on stairs, then I worry about them being sicked on!

Actually my partner was last 1 who was sick on stair carpet, been drinking, then he knew he was going be sick again while waiting on top landing and decided to come back into bedroom and be sick on his clothes, instead of going back down to bathroom. Very annoyed I was and went into kid's room,my daughter heard all the fuss and patted her bed for me to get into.

He had to clean it up before work the next day,I wasn't doing it.
I was pretty annoyed and had made plans to go out the next day and it ruined it as I had bad nights sleep over it and was tired and didn't bother going.

He had to leave for work about 9am so was up pretty early sorting it,forgot to mention he was non stop sick for about 90mins,it was well gone 3am when I did resort to going to childrens room to sleep.
I don't know anyone who been sick for litrally 90mins over booze, I think thats why I was narked off most, not like it was once or twice.

Eeugh!!!!

Well one time, my other half in a drunken state, had a pee in the babies bath that was sitting in our proper bath. When he went, I thought to myself that doesnt sound normal. Went and checked afterwards - dirty devil. Anyway, I told him what he did, he was so drunk, he started crying and saying how could you say such a thing - I would never do that to my babies!!!!!!

Then to make a point, he went and drunk a bit out of it saying it was water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He soon quietened down after that!

Good idea - plus think of the cost compared to a carpet - plus it could be replaced easily when your nipper gets to the age they start to ruin everything!!
