Dell Laptop Fault - Getting repaired

My mum bought one of the Dell laptops in the Carphone Warehouse promotion last October.

It's hardly been used but yesterday just refused to turn on. It is in some way broken.

Has anyone got an experience getting things repaired by Dell? What is the correct process - to go to Carphone Warehouse or to Dell? Will I have to pay to send it off or will they collect and return it?

I've been told i'm likely to loose all the data on it, which shouldn't be a massive issue as she's not used it much!

Any advice welcomed!

Try carphone warehouse first

Go there, but you'll probably have to call Dell. IME, they're usually pretty good, although not very quick. I was on the phone for about 30 minutes last night trying to book a customers laptop in (after having first tried a full factory restore).

You'll need to call them, with the laptop next to you so they can try a few things first. You'll also need the service tag from the bottom of the laptop.

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like i'll have to go to Dell - hoping they dont expect me to send it at my expense!

Will keep the thread updated for lolz

I work at Currys and for Dells you have the choice of either call yourself and do the troubleshooter/book in for repair, or take it to store and have them do it.

if you ring, they'll pick it up from you, take it to store and it'll be picked up and dropped back off there again.

That's Currys though. There's no guarantee that CPW won't just refer the OP to Dell straight off. Although DSGi generally get a slagging off for customer service, I think we do pretty well in making the calls for people. As I said, I spent about 45 minutes helping out someone the other day (restoring first to ensure it wasn't a software issue and then calling dell and doing their troubleshooting)

unlikely cos if Dell don't let our guys fix the laptops unless its a damage problem under WEH, its unlikely they will let CPW techs (if they have any) fix it, more than likely it will go to Dell for assesment to make sure it is a fault and hasnt been caused by malicious or accidental damage, which is within their rights as a retailer.
