so are you saying that HDMI from the netbook to the projector will work fine with no problems? I was aware that the cables existed, I just wanted clarification that it works before I buy one... thanks to all for your help

Have no reason to believe it wouldn't.

Sound would have to come out of the other ports.

I can't see how that would work - HDMI and VGA are not compatible in any form as one is digital and the other analogue and should need a converter. The reason you get cheap DVI to VGA adapters is because DVI contains an analogue component that you can extract via a simple adapter.

Not with just a standard cable, you're going to need something that converts the digital hdmi signal to an analogue VGA signal:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HDFury-Gamer-Fury-PS3-Cable/dp/B001IZK0AQ

You'll notice than unlike the cable earlier in this thread, this one has the transcoder box which does the hdmi/vga conversion. They have a cheaper PS3 and Wii to VGA converter cable which looks like it may do the job as the PS3 just outputs hdmi but it's more of a gamble (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Playstation-Nintendo-Monitor-Cable-Lead/dp/B001FU1EMW/ref=pd_cp_ce_2). If you do some reading up on your Netbook you'll find some forum threads discussing the problem as you're not the first one to have this issue, the HDfury is the one I've seen mentioned a couple of times for this purpose.

No problem - I should make it clear that I haven't used either of these products nor tried to convert from hdmi to vga so make sure you check out any potential product extensively first.

something I didn't mention was that I am not bothered about the sound as I only need the connection to present PowerPoint
