Dell Vostro 1000, AC Adapter Not Lighting Up, Battery, Charger Or Both Need Replaced?

My 11 year-old niece has a Vostro 1000 laptop with a 6-cell battery, about 2 1/2 years old, which I bought thanks to a thread on HUKD.

She's saying it doesn't work when plugged in, and the green light doesn't come on (AC Adapter). Is there any way I can determine which needs replaced (battery, adapter or both)? From reading around I'm not too sure.

Also, it has a 3 year on-site warranty (still in warranty), dumb question time, does the warranty cover it? Naturally, I have my doubts, they would probably say it's wear and tear.

Her mum isn't interested in computers, so it's down to Auntie to sort it out :D

Thank you :)

Sounds like both. The battery on my Vostro 1000 was knackered but it still worked when plugged in, got a new battery now though.

Once i replaced battery, it stopped charging, turned out the charger was duff as well. Fortuntely I had a spare one.

If its not them then its most likely connection inside laptop on motherboard, would need soldering or a new motherboard

you can take out the battery and run the laptop from the charger

if it still doesnt power up, need a new adapter

the sockets in laptops lead a very hard live, people yank them around all the time, and they often fail

280479167053 on ebay for a new adapter, if you need it

The charger should show a green light when plugged in to the wall and even if not plugged into the laptop. If theres no light on it then its knackered.

Suspected as much. Thank you. I'll take the battery out when I'm next up and double-check the AC Adapter. I have a suspicion the battery would be on its last legs after 2 1/2 years too, but don't know for sure. I'll ring Dell re the warranty, though I'm sure they'll tell me nicely to get lost :) Nothing ventured, and all that!

Good thinking, Batman :) I have a ton of fuses, I'll put some in my handbag.

Is this AC Adapter compatible? (just thinking ahead, if need be)

as regards the warranty, yes the ac adapter and laptop,, whichever bit is faulty will be covered so long as it isnt abuse

however, the battery wont be covered, as its considered comsumable

Call Dell. They'll walk you through all the diags (which aren't entirely optional), and send out a new part as necessary, as long as it isn't the battery which comes only with a 1yr battery.

Ok, thanks yet again. I'll humph the laptop back home with me and phone Dell myself as they tend to ask questions about the machine.

Thanks to all who posted. Right enough, Dell are replacing the AC Adapter (in my naivety I'd have just bought one!!), motherboard and keyboard on Monday.

My 11 year-old niece says the laptop overheats and doesn't stay on for extended periods, I've noticed it running really hot and cutting out, so an overhaul before the warranty's up won't hurt. As for the keyboard, I've only ever had desktops, so I don't know about their wear and tear, probably had a hard life being used by a kid!

The advisor tried to sell me a battery but I know cheaper places and I'll wait for the techie guy (or girl)'s verdict ;-)
