Dell Warrenty - vista/Xp

hello, i'm about to buy a new dell laptop, i'm going to go for the 3 years warrenty
but i might install XP on the machine, will that invalidate my warrenty?

it states that Dell laptops will onyl come with XP if i'm a business user - is this true?

is the warrenty hardware only?

If you phone them they might be able to offer XP even if the website doesn't, if you're going for an extended warranty then more than likely they'll go out of their way to help.

It's not really an issue even if you do install another OS so long as you keep the recovery partitions, that way you can restore the system and they'll be none the wiser.

Don't buy the 3 year warranty! Wait a few weeks and they will phone you and offer a 3 year warranty at a discounted rate. They did this with me.

you can use your downgrade rights to go down to XP perfectly legally. MS even have to give you a serial for it. only thing you have to supply yourself is a CD. it won't effect your warranty but your tech support for the laptop might be effected. in that if it only comes with vista they won't have XP scripts for it

or purchase it with a nationwide credit card. They give you an extra years warranty on electrical items.

my initial one year warranty is due to run out in early october and i've not had a single phone call offering me a deal on an extension to it

shop elsewhere for a warranty as bound to be cheaper.

Now that Vista has been out nearly 2 years, some companies may not write XP drivers for new laptops.

You may downgrade to XP and find the sound or graphics do not work, or not to their full potential.

Check with Dell if they know if XP drivers are available before you buy.

very true. I've got an HTPC with vista when I tried installing XP on it the setup would blue screen. the hardware itself wouldn't accept an XP install!

The Vista-only shipping is a ploy by Microsoft to ramp up the number of Vista installs, as virtually no-one is buying it other than home users where it comes pre-installed. They have now banned all PC suppliers from shipping it unless business users pay to get it down-graded.

I'd be very surprised if the Dell PC is not XP compliant; there will be very few machines from mainstream suppliers, unless extremely new, that can't run XP.

That only applies to vista buisness, enterprise and ultimate versions I believe.

I have just realised that my one year warranty (business hardware support although the machine is used only for home use) ran out yesterday. I have heard nothing from DELL. Wondering if I should contact them or wait to see if they make an offer.

Dell have occasionally phoned me up to extend the warranty near the end of the year but it's been more expensive than taking it out initially with the machine.

With regards to what the warranty covers, it doesn't invalidate the warranty if you install XP on it or any other operating system as Dell don't support the software. Their diagnostics system is indepdendent of the OS so when you have a problem you run that and give them the code which allows it all to proceed as normal. If you're having problems troubleshooting they may ask you to use the original operating system and similarly if Dell rebuild the machine for any reason it would be in the initial configuration.

I'd check what XP support there is for the laptop by going to the Dell downloads section - if they have an XP option there you're sorted but if not you might find it a bit fiddly. I bought a Vostro 1310 for my Mum with Vista Business, when it arrived I just wiped it and put XP on it without issue.
