So, yeah. I totally envision a future, at least as far as my tech life goes, where I'll have one fully-featured desktop PC for when I'm home, and one high-end smartphone for when I'm not at home, or at home but on the sofa or in bed. 'Tis the best of both worlds, isn't it?
There used to be some really good deals for desktops posted but in the last 12 months it's been swamped with laptops... and not good laptops - just cheap slow laptops.

It's weird but that whole argument runs contrary to what I see happening.
Desktops will become a niche product for power users whilst laptops will continue to sell more and more. Laptops will become more and more powerful, even though they already fulfil most people's everyday needs. Even if smartphones and tablets become more prevalent and useful, the home pc will probably still be a laptop. You talk about the laptop requiring a 'conscious effort to lug around', but most people already carry a bag of some sort. They also take up less space in the home which will become an issue going forward.

I'm with F&F on this. Got 5 desktops running as servers which I never get anywhere near if I can help it, just use VNC. Laptops are more compact/convenient and using remote control they can harness the power of better machines without having to put up with the irritating noise.
I am not sure this is true. Top spec laptops now are very quick. I have middle of the range laptops and they are really fast.
Desktops are generally more expensive than laptops nowadays. The only thing I can see them having more than a laptop is the disk space storage size, which for me isn't a problem as I tend to delete most of my stuff as I wouldn't want to be caught with them on me disk drive.
I can't see desktops disappearing soon, purely for the work aspect.
The portability argument for laptops is poor because of tablets.
I have one hub desktop, a 27" iMac ;) which I cannot see me getting rid of any time soon. I use it to work, stream and sync to our other devices.
