i can remember it snowing much heavier and for far more of the winter months when I was young(er) but cant say i have ever seen a church spire almost covered :)
#5
Not really but there are different types of snow,A few years back we had some snow that was very powdery and didnt stick together ,I think they call it sugar snow and the Snow drifts were massive ,I work in the building industry and some of the drifts up the side of builngs were 20ft high,This may be what he is talking about,

That is very certainly not at all old!!:w00t:
In the 60's there seemed to be a lot more and deeper snow. I daresay that the Met Office or somewhere have records to check up on.
#22
When i was 10 i remember it was really deep and it came up to my thighs. And we still went to school,
#23
It used to snow more frequently, I remember 1991 and their was a lot of power cuts, It was a lot worse than today's snow, I think people do exaggerate the past a little though.
#24
i'm only 43 and i can remember as a child regularly having to jump out of the bedroom window to dig out the front porch because it was over the height of the porch (about 8 feet). i am at reasonably high altitude at the top of the welsh valleys but 15, even 20 feet drifts were common
#25
i say that im still upset over u not trusting me

These pics are photographs from my grandparents that my Dad scanned for his family tree portfolio. ( I had to take a copy!) Remembered the mad snow pics so have posted them here to show you guys.

This was in and around Ballater, Aberdeeshire when my dad was a wee boy (that's him and his brothers and sisters and Dad in one of the small single pics) and my dad is 52 now.

enjoy!

I remember snow this deep or maybe a bit more, and yep having to walk to school in it..lol
I think i was 9 or 10 so that would be 1979 or 1980 and the snow had drifted up the back door so my dad had to dig us out the front door..lol oh the good ole days:w00t:

yeah would be around 1977-8 for me. We had to take extra shoes and socks and a skirt, then change when we got there. Werent allowed to wear trousers if ya was a girl.

White christmas's were commoner years ago, like in charles dickens stories because Christmas day was celebrated in january (colder than dec) and the climate was colder in the Victorian age.

that's why they are rarer.
