Directline and price comparison websites

So Directline make a big deal about not being on price comparison websites. Is this actually a good thing for the consumer? Are they guaranteed to beat any quote you get off a price comparison website or are they going to hard sell you a 'better' policy while you're a captive audience on the phone to them?

Are they actually implying Price Comparison websites are a bad thing anyway? That because of their commission based nature they're more expensive? I would have thought the price comparison websites would have done a good job of keeping prices lower, maybe I'm just naive?

What are your experiences with using them, did they beat any quote from a price comparison website?

I am with directline and they were cheaper than anyone else and they also did free installments,Obviously this wont be the same for everyone,
Also they are the first company that havent tried to scam me by adding on extras when it came to renewal time,

Price comparison websites are inevitably owned by one insurance company or another

And I have always found that the price on the comparison site is more expensive than you can get going direct to the same company

im with directline too and they where the cheapest for me, i searched everywhere!! but i also stayed with them as i had additional driver no claims with them, which they took into account.

I'm with directline, always found them cheaper than anything I've found on a price comparison site.

One thing I can't stand is that when you put your details in a price comparison site, it gives you a quote but it's automatically based on a number of assumptions that more often than not don't apply to me. When I change these assumptions, the price shoots up...

Shopping around here too - free installments would be nice - 24% they want to charge me! :(

i'm with direct line, was cheapest for me, and you can do it online, you don't have to phone them, so no hard sell.

These comparison sites are a bad thing overall, someone has to pay for the percentage that they add to the overall costs, guess who?

Also insurance companies often reduce cover levels so that they come out cheaper.

I used to be with direct line until I went with 'Privilege' after getting a cheaper quote on a comparison website and who own 'Privilege'

Direct Line ??

if you get an new quote each year from the website it is always cheaper than the renewal they send you.
Hence you finding privelege cheaper, you get what is simply an introductry rate, next year direct line will be cheaper than privelege for the exact same reason.

directline 50% cheaper than the comparison sites for me (£42 for £30K contents cover).

Spot on!

Always get a new quote rather than accepting a renewal

Blimey! Just checked esure and my renewal is actually cheaper than their online quote!

And cheaper than direct line....although my premium has still increased over last year :x

Never had a cheaper quote from direct line or any of the others that don't use comparison sites. do find the insurance does go up by 10% though but then i just use the comparisons to get another quote and find that i can keep my insurance at a set level. Even with the free days direct line still came out a couple of hundread dearer than what i am paying now.

Same with Quidco and cashback for me as well they always work out more than the comparisons to make the cashback effective.

By the way i have 4 years NCB on my home and 7 years on the car so cannot be classed as a risk for direct line etc.
