DNS problem?

Ok what the problem is that the network is unsecure(and landord doesnt know how to secure it and wont let me into admin page)

The ISP is BT broadband and 8 meg but the speed is all over the place no matter if its 4am or 4pm you might get 2-4 meg for a mintute then drop to like 14.4kbps(which is like 1.5Kb) then it sticks at that for ages.

Like youtube videos or any streaming ones load so slowly and often freeze and you need to refresh the page to reload it.

Generally torrents are far better than FTP transfers so i assume its a DNS problem or a problem connecting to the FTP servers.

Gaming ping is good though, and its not my pc as have tried a internal pci card for desktop, external usb, ethernet wireless adaptor and laptop all have same problem(though desktop is the worst maybe signal is blocked)

beat me to it ! if its the ports your kinda fekd without getting access to the router

yes, you really need access to the router, are you connecting wirelessly or via a network lead to the router?

Have you tried to connect to the router by typing in the 192.168....... etc..to a web address bar??

If it is a Belkin 54g then the standard passwords are easy to find from google, if it's unsecured there may be a chance they havent changed the stock password for the router either.

PS: only 2 posts to go till 3K!!

username and password = admin

no it's not a dns problem

Its a netgear think the standard BT one as I know someone else with a bt netgear router and its exactly the same.

It could I guess also be because the router has a bridge/booster on every floor i.e a black netgear wireless box.

I cant get into the admin account anyway since it doesnt show on the network, I could physcially access the router but as its attached to the wall high up would need to stand on a chair and put a long ethernet cable into back of it to my laptop.

If you think it's a DNS problem then why don't you try changing the DNS server?
Go to your network adapter properties and go to to tcp/ip, then manually enter in a dns server. Use open dns;

208.67.220.220
208.67.222.222

Done this so many times at work I didn't even need to look up the IP addresses lol.
