I need a bit of help

About an hour ago hubby's switched the upstairs landing light on, as he did the bulb popped out of the holder across the room, it was just the glass bit leaving the metal bit still in.
My downstairs lights a all now not working.
I assuming there is some relation as its too much of a coincidence, so do i need an electrician or is this something common and easy to sort?

Had a couple of these lately (glass come apart from the base) I put the glass part back in to get the base out, you have to be careful though.

I've had this before. I isolated the power and used a pair of long nosed pliers to get the rest of the bulb out.

If not insert finger and slice to the bone on the razor edges as you turn

Potato.............seriously just push a tatty into the metal bit, it will grip and allow you to remove the lamp cap. Best done wearing a rubber glove to be on safe side.

Without sounding harsh, if you have no idea what you are looking at or for in those photo's then I for one do not feel easy giving advice to you. Electricity is not to be 'fiddled' with when the safety of the household in question. Either get an electrician in or at least someone who knows what they are doing.

i have a basic idea, ive done it ages ago in the past, im assuming im just replacing the wire in the one that is black and has no wire?
#16
1 You need 5A fuse wire for lIghting circuits, comes normally on a card
2 The fuse holders with 5A on with a white dot are the lighting fuses
3 Turn on the light which work
4 Take out each 5A fuse in turn, if the lights go out the fuse is good
5 The fuse which has black blast marks and no wire is the fuse you have"blown"
6 Replace fuse wire by loosening screw each end sliding fuse wire through holder, tighten screws
7 Replace fuse holder into carrier on fuseboard

Simpless

PS IF IN DOUBT GET AN ELECTRICIAN IN

I wonder how much electricians make off of a simple blown fuses - and how many are honest about what it was and only charge the call-out fee :)

Such a simple job but so dangerous to someone with no prior electrical knowledge

First isolate the consumer unit by flicking the switch off on the right

You need to find the fuse which is broken, Which should be White (5a lighting circuit)

You need to get some 5a fuse wire, Can be had from wilkinsons, maplin etc Unscrew both ends, let the old pieces fall out, whack a lengh of 5a fuse wire in one terminal to the other with a small amount of slack, Tighten back up, put front back on a jobs a good'n

I did it this morning, i had the wire already, thank you for all the help everyone, was easy, and no need for an expensive sparky on this job,I knew it was something simple, just awkward to do as I have been out for days and wanted to do it in daylight incase I had any probs.
Lights back on ta

How old is the wiring in your house?

1960s I'd guess

Not too bad, my last house was 126 yr old, some of the features were interesting, the light sockets were weird round brown things

was this an energy saving bulb or Incandescent?
