Some of you may remember playing Elite back in the day, or maybe you have played Eve, freelancer, star trek, pretty much any free roam space game.

Well on the 16th Elite Dangerous get's released & it's awesome.

I was a kickstarter backer & paid extra to get Beta access so I have been playing it a bit, logged 82 hours so far according to RAPTR but it's more than that.

This game has almost everything, you can pick your own path, be a trader, explorer, miner, bounty hunter, pirate or soldier. It's completely open & you could do all if you so wish.

The Galaxy contains 400 billion start systems. Accurately modelled (although not 100%) on the milky way. You can recognise constellations, star systems & the like, you can travel to them, explore distant worlds, all that good stuff.

It's multiplayer but due to the size of the game area you won't see that many players kicking around although there are plenty of NPC's to interact with.

The game is a buy once thing although there will be future expansions that you can buy, planetary landing & other such things.

So are you going to enlist & become a commander of your own ship?

Awesome :) I sent a friend request, Cmdr Michael Watt. Part time trader, Neutral to all, mostly floating around in a Viper :)

Im thinking No Mans Sky is going to be better.

Waiting for No Mans Sky but I remember the Elite series well and a new update to the series will be awesome.
#5
Sounds good, I never like Star Trek on-line that much, hope this is better.

"Orange is neutral, red is hostile, & green is an ally".

I hope there is a setting for those of us with Protanopia, Deuteranopia, Protanomaly, &/or Deuteranomaly colour vision deficiencies, otherwise those playing are going to find at least one in seven also playing are confused & will be sending "friendly fire".

Yes there is, currently it's unofficial but you can change the HUD colours by editing the graphics file. ED said they are working on it to make it part of the options but haven't yet as they aren't 100% happy with it's implementation yet.

Thanks.

I know I am biased, but that would be something I would think about very early in the planning stages.

I can imagine my mrs filing for divorce if I set this up, getting away with a bit of light warcraft is hard enough.

loved the old elite games especially frontier.

dont have a gaming pc right now :(

wish it would come to the consoles but fat chance of that happening

The original Elite back on the BBC model B was the most amazing thing ever.
How they managed to fit so much into such little RAM makes me wonder to this day.

Look up the specs that people have been using on the forum. It's nowhere near as intensive as you'd think, if you use the lower settings.

Agreed IT IS amazing the amount of content braben fitted into original elite

Also if anything there was 10x the content in Frontier elite back in the day on the amiga 500 than there is in elite dangerous (such as planet landing etc). ok the game was buggy as hell and kinda broken, but still to this day frontier is the game i have spent most time on out of all the games i have played.

i certainly would have done better at school if i hadnt had elite frontier as a kid....

Anyway you need a 700+ pound pc to play elite dangerous so i wont be playing it for a while.

I begged for years on his forum for him to make this game...

You don't need a £700 PC at all. £100 added to mst PCs will give a playable experience. The rest is just spit and polish, pretty much the case for most PC games.
A GTX750 will add to mst PCs, if your power supply copes then adding a slightly more powerful card will improve the situation.

unfortunatly i have a laptop that cannot or will not be up to the task. So it would mean bulding a gaming rig, which would be 700 ish. looks like im going console again once they drop to 200
#20
Hopefully it will come to consoles, it is on their wish list. I would like to play it as I loved Elite but I don't like gaming on PC's.
No man's sky seems a great alternative and is on my watch list for 2015.
#21
You really don't need a gaming PC. I played it first on my everyday laptop with Intel graphics before it was optimised, ok it wasn't spectacular but it was playable. There are people who are playing it on old workstations. Don't bash it without at least looking into the specs required to play.

Give it a go, its worth it :)

I wasn't bashing it.... I love braben and elite truly. I anything I was bashing myself for giving up on PCs and going console.

Looks great but pricey.

After watching further vids I think I will take the plunge. It just looks too good- anyone use 360 controller/keyboard combo? I don't want any flight controllers and will find just using mouse/keyboard a bit confusing I reckon.

You will be at a disadvantage with an xbox controller, simply because of the 6 degrees of movement. I played for quite a while using a PS3 controller & while it was good, the joystick just made it more fun.

The xbox controller is pretty much plug & play I believe & is used by alot of the beta testers.

But Xbox controllers do have two thumb sticks so would have as much control as a joystick I would have thought. Still it does look like a fantastic game...I think this game, comfy armchair, glasses of whisky could be a great way to spend some evenings.

You don't quite get the accuracy you get from a stick. It still works though.

It's not all that bad. The fixed weapons are more powerful, then you get gimballed which aim to an extent & you also get turreted weapons but the price increases are huge & the damage is usually less for gimballed & especially turret weapons.

It is quite a nice thing to look at. Glad they are getting the publicity :)

I'm frustrated that I cannot make my mind up on this.

I don't usually (ever) buy games on release - I tend to wait until they are below a tenner or so!! However I'm tempted to pay the £35 pre release (still available by the looks of it) .... but too many games these days, even popular games, just don't do it for me after I've got them .... I also now tend not to buy without seeing a few different reviews and/or having tried a demo.

So far as I can tell, there is no demo for this?
Hell, I can't even find any reviews for this (Gamespot, IGN, metacritic etc...)

Difficult to make a purchasing decision when all you have to go on is the hype..... though the gameplay videos look great (though, don't they always? Even the crap games?)

And a completely different sales model for this over conventional games - only sold on their web site - I've no idea how quickly pricing will fall.......

And online only .... my sometimes patchy, always slow (relatively...) rural broadband worries me..... how forgiving is the connection? Does it just check in every x minutes, or will it crash if the connection drops? (the single player game)...

I think I'm talking myself out of it.....
#34
They have put the price up to 40 quid (from 35) and still advertising it as a last minute saving. What will the rrp be then? So many dirt cheap games out there they need to be careful and not too greedy. I mean aren't they going to have paid for add-ons , micro transactions for skins etc so not like they wont make load of cash anyway.

No it is 40 quid now. I think I will give it a miss until it is patched a bit/steam sell it/ is on sale. Buying just released games can be frustrating and, expensive, new games doubly so.
#36
I cant see it getting cheaper soon. Unlike the alternatives, such as Eve which is subscription based & star citizen which is turning into paytowin the price is reasonable. Personally wont be buying star citizen as the prices for that get ridiculous & eve... Well that can get boring fast unless you have alot of time to learn the ropes.

I still recommend the game. I paid more than the £40 on kickstartee & more than happy with it as the playability even now is worth the spend. The ongoing development is just going to make it better.
