dont sell it without replacing the hard drive! No recovery disc wont do it - nothing will get rid of your details other than putting new hard drive in it

yup, they basically just put an image on the hard disc usually which includes the os.

no. reformats and reinstalls everything as it left factory. Granted, some hacker nutter with specialist may be able to recover data maybe. maybe.

you can never ever completely wipe a hard disc. The data is there if someone wants to get it, if they know how. You can use a program to wipe it (lots of free downloads on internet) but it wont completely go
#7
Yeh if you use a tool for completely wiping the drive you will be fine. Some people are too paranoid.
#8
You can get over Write programmes that will over write for the needed minimum times for data retreival to be impossible, google is you friend.

I used one called cyber scrub (free trial) when I gave my computer to my ex

orite, im not too worried about some mega hacker getting in as i dont have that much money they can steal if they did have my bank details so i am fine with it just wiping it mostly
#11
give this a go, http://www.cyberscrub.com/download/

Just to be sure

Use the ultimate boot cd to wipe then reinstall an os. Easy and quick, you could theoretically go into more elaborate methods but these are only needed at the highest levels (your avatar reminds me of someone cluffy).

Actually, I have a n00b question on this -

my recovery partition is damaged, as is my original windows install...

if i were to "obtain" a copy of vista on the net, could I just put my activation key in and make it "genuine" again?

rep for help!

I thought the activation key only works for the disc you install?

be sure to match the install type...oem for oem (also helps to find a manufacturer specific img) or retail.
